  1. POST Power On Self Test

  2. What is a POST? • A sequence of diagnostic tests that are run automatically by a device when the power is turned on. • This diagnostic program checks to make sure that everything is present and functioning properly.

  3. What takes place during a typical POST sequence? • The system board is checked • Memory is checked • The current system configuration is compared with that recorded by the PC's configuration program to see if anything has been added, removed, or malfunctioning • The video operation is started • The diskette drive, hard disk drive, CD-ROM drive, and any other drives that may be installed are checked.

  4. Post POST • When POST is finished, typically it will beep, and then let your operating system start to boot. If POST finds an error, it may beep more than once and display a POST error message.

  5. On to BIOS • If there are no errors, the next instruction that needs processing is the beginning of the boot program. This boot program is stored permanently in a set of Read Only Memory chips that contain the PC’s BIOS.
