The doctrinal and empirical basis of the proposal Theexistinginstruments and internationalpoliciesthatrecognizetherights of olderpersonshelptoidentifysome general spheresthatshould be included in a futurecovention. • Specialprotectionlawsfortherights of olderpersons in LatinAmericadeliver a primarystandarization of therights of olderpersons. • Thesituationforolderpersonsallowsfortheidentification of specificareasthatrequire a greater and broaderprotectionbytheinternationalcommunity.

Equality and non-discrimination by age • Prohibition of alldiscriminationbyreason of age and guaranteeallolderpersonseffectiveprotectionagainstdiscriminationbyreason of age and anyother motive. • Adoption of pertinentmeasurestoensuretherealization of reasonableaccommodation. • Adoption of specialmeasuresfortheprotection of olderpersons. • Development of specificapproaches in ageingpoliciesdirectedtowardsolderpersons in highvulnerabilitysituations, includingwomen, personswithdisabilities, migrants and persons in povertyor social marginalizationsituations, amongothers.
