  1. Warm Up--Review Explain the difference between ACTIVE and PASSIVE voice using the sentence frames below. Passive voice occurs when ______________________. In contrast, when a sentence uses the active voice___________________________________. Identify whether the sample sentences below are written in active or passive voice. In order to be successful, changes had to be made by the manager. The singing group demonstrated considerable talent.

  2. Review: Passive Voice • Occurs when you make the object of an action (the receiver of the action) into the subject of a sentence. • In other words, whoever or whatever is performing the action is not the subject of the sentence. • Example: Why was the road crossed by the chicken? • The subject of the example sentence above—the road—is the passive receiver of the action, not the subject performing the action.

Review: Active Voice • When a verb is in the active voice, the subject of the sentence is also the doer of the action. • Example: Why did the chicken cross the road? • In this example, the subject—the chicken—is also the doer or the thing performing the action. It is NOT the passive receiver of the action.

  7. Instructions: • You will compete in teams—I will assign your team. • I will provide each team with an envelope containing: • A set of words (10 total) • A set of matching definitions (10 total) • Each team will match the correct definitions with each vocabulary word.

  8. RULES: • No team member may move from their seat once the game begins. • Once a team believes they have all words correct they must raise their hand and shout “LOCKED IN!” • If I review the vocabulary and there is an incorrect match, that team must wait until all other teams are reviewed in their respective order before given a second chance. (So don’t lock in until absolutely sure) *Violation of any rule results in disqualification

  12. Verbs and Verb Phrases • Verb = A word that expresses action or being • Verb Phrase = A group of words that does the job of a single verb. In a verb phrase, there is a one main verb and one or more helping verbs. • Examples: • These sentences were written by Mrs. Ramirez. • Laws have made an impact on our daily lives. • City laws are called ordinances.   13. Identifying Verb Phrases • His father was teaching art at UCLA. • He had become very ill. • She would return to the countryside later that year. • After a few months in the country, she had planned a return to the city.

  14. Parallel Structure • When two or more actions are being described in the same sentence, all verbs or verb phrases must be in the same form. • Example: • Incorrect: My dog Oreo loves runningand to chew stuffed animals. • Correct: My dog Oreo loves running and chewing stuffed animals. OR My dog Oreo loves to run and to chew stuffed animals.

Practice Parallel Structure: “You do on your own” • On a blank sheet of paper, generate three sample sentences that use INCORRECT parallel structure. • Leave space below each sentence • On the back of your sheet write the CORRECT answer. *You will use these sentences to TEST three of your classmates…
