  1. HiPAP Calibration Note if in doubt click the “Help” button

  2. Velocity Cast • It is important to have the correct Sound Velocity for the correct use of the HiPAP and HPR. Do a velocity cast, process the cast into a comma separated file, with Depth, and Speed of Sound.

  3. The APOS Screen The Sound Velocity Icon

  4. Click on the Sound Velocity Icon

  5. Entering the Velocity Profile • A picture similar to the slide below will appear.

  6. Select “File”, and “Open, or click the “Icon” to open a file. The file open Icon

  7. A dialog box similar to this will open. Either steer to the place where your “new” velocity cast is situated, or copy your file into the APOS\Data folder and select it (The file type may need to be changed to “ALL Files” in the drop down menu)

  8. Your velocity cast should open in a text format. You can edit the file like the example, giving a date or location to make the file meaningful. Added date information

  9. Select Convert from the file menu. Convert

  10. You will be asked to convert File to Data

  11. You can now give a Heading text to your Profile, and select the fist line to convert. Use the depth neares to just below the transducer. Also make sure you know which is the depth and velocity column in your file.

And Finally • Close down all the open boxes. • Save everything when prompted. • When finished click the Sound Velocity icon again. • Make sure you have saved the correct Active Velocity. • Close the Velocity Profile Window. • The .SVT file created will go in the final report so know where it is and label it for the current project.

  16. Add the Transponder as usual Enter the Correct serial number Don’t forget the release box Select MPT

  17. Go to Configure Transponder Either from the menu on the top, Configure Transponder, or right click the icon and select Transponder

  18. Tab to the second Page The Release button is down here. You only get asked once if you are sure you want to Release the Transponder The second page is marked as Transponder Functions It is quite useful to configure the Green Dot screen as Trend. Then setup the Trend menu to monitor Depth from the Transponder

  19. ENTER OFFSETS • Enter GPS Antenna offsets in the Geographic positioning setup menu under the System tab. • You will need to be logged in as “Service” under the User tab. • Forward and Starboard are positive, Port and Aft are negative values.

  20. ENTER OFFSETS • Enter Transducer head offsets under the Configure tab, Transceiver menu and hit the Configure button in the Transducer square. • Forward and Starboard are positive Aft and Port are negative values. “Below” value is positive. • Enter Vertical Depth: distance of head below water line.

  21. ADJUST TRANSDUCER • Under the Configure tab, Transceiver menu is the HiPap DPR Setup button. • In this menu change the Search sector to wide angles for towing or shallow work and narrow for deep drops. • Use the same rule for Beam Width adjustments. • Enable beam steering when using lower degree settings.

  22. Activate the Calibration transponder, after it has been deployed and is on the bottom Calibration Transponder

  23. Click on Utility, then on Transducer Alignment Transducer Alignment

  24. Right click the white section of the box

  25. Select New Alignment of APOS Transducer

  26. A dialog box like this will appear. Select your calibration transponder from the drop down menu. Also if you have more than one HiPAP, select the one you are calibrating. Select your Transponder Drop down Menu The transducer being calibrated

  27. Note. You must have GPS, preferably DGPS into the system and working. The Transponder The Transducer

  28. Select the transponder, and right click on it

  29. Right Click on Properties

  30. Decide if you want to start and stop the calibration manually or automatically after a chosen number of position pairs . Normally I would select “After # position pairs” choose 100

  31. The Pattern • It doesn’t matter on the chosen pattern • The preferred method is 4 Cardinal points and then a spin stopping at each quadrant, over the top of the transponder. • Note Stay in the beam footprint of the transponder

  32. 4 Cardinal Points and a Spin Five sets should be the same heading and one set should be 180 degrees of that heading.

  33. Press the “Calculate” button. After a short period of time an answer will appear. If doing manual editing then un-check Auto exclude before Calculate Number of points logged

  34. Manual Exclude • Un check Auto exclude and then view measurements graphicly

  35. Select views Choose “Vessel”,”Measured transponder positions” & Compensated transponder positions”. These will be e-mailed in for approval.

  36. CompTpPos will be zoomed out, left click and mark square in area to zoom in.

  37. Right click and mark square to exclude outlying points

  39. If the “Update” button is not active, you will need to close all the dialog boxes and log on as “Service”

  40. Logging on as Service Select “User”

  41. Logon Select Logon

  42. From the drop down menu select Service

  43. The Password is ALWAYS 1997 The Password

  44. Select “Show Results”

  45. Update is now live

  46. You Will Be Warned

  47. Select Yes The new Pitch Roll and Gear (Rotation) will be down loaded into the tranceiver Almost Done

  48. Save to File, a jpg is saved of the alignment

  49. Close down the Dialog Boxes

  50. When you get to this one Right click on the transponder. Select “Save Measurements As” Save the file, the default is the Transponder channel, ie B42 The transducer being calibrated ie 11,21, 31 etc if you have more than one, And the time the file was saved. You can name the file anything you like. Then send to CS with all the three images and the menu page Save Measurements as
