  6. Science-related Advisory Groups • (Internal) NPOESS Science Team – reports to Northrop Grumman • (External) NPOESS Science Advisory Board (Joe Friday, chair) - reports to Northrop Grumman • Integrated Weather Product Test Bed Team – oversees Raytheon IDPS – reports to Northrop Grumman • Instrument Cal/Val Teams – reports to Northrop Grumman & IPO • Operational Algorithm Teams (8) – reports to IPO • Data Archive Board– reports to OSDPD

  7. Some Typical User Questions • How do I access specific products, whether in real time or after the fact? • How can I influence the generation of new products? • Where do I go when I think the algorithms, calibration, and/or sensor isn’t working properly? • How can I get a long-term data record (i.e., for climate) reprocessed, especially when it spans several satellites?

  8. RecommendationNPOESS User Advisory Team of the NOAA Science Advisory Board Suggested Terms of Reference: Provide guidance and advice concerning the overall performance of the NPOESS system from the user perspective, including: • ease of access to existing data & products • need for new and/or improved products • both research and operational perspectives

  9. Back Up

  10. NPOESS Responsibilities Include: Interface Data Processing Segment • Product generation subsystems • Ingest: Receives SMD, auxiliary, and ancillary data and creates RDRs • Processing: Receives RDRs from Ingest, produces TDRs, SDRs, and EDRs • Data Delivery: Receives RDRs, TDRs, SDRs, and EDRs from Data Management, aggregates and reformats into HDF 5, and provides to the Centrals, Cal/Val, ADS/CLASS, and SDS via a file transfer or common disk services • Product quality, calibration, and validation subsystem • Cal/Val: Provides for daily monitoring of product quality, generation of calibration coefficients, and validation of product science • Centrals have control over what products are created, which ancillary data sets are used, and how products are delivered

  11. NESDIS Responsibilities • Identify and acquire new data processing and dissemination systems to ensure environmental data can be acquired, processed, distributed to users and archived during the NPOESS era • Ensure NESDIS continues to meet existing user requirements and provides continuity of service during the transition from the current POES program to NPOESS • Maximize the risk reduction benefits made available by the NPOESS Preparatory Project (NPP)
