  1. DO NOW: Topic: Spontaneity in REDOX • One beaker Contains: • Zn(NO3)2 & Cu • AgNO3& Cu • Which beaker is which…how can you tell?!

  2. Single Replacement reactions are Redox Rxns • Use table J to predict if the reaction is spontaneous • Any metal will donate (lose) its electrons to ionof any metal below it. = Spontaneous • Any nonmetal will steal (gain)electrons from the ionof any nonmetal below it. = Spontaneous

  3. One beaker Contains: • Zn(NO3)2 & Cu • AgNO3& Cu • Which beaker is which…how can you tell?!

  4. Which of the following will occur spontaneously • Li + AlCl3 • Cs + CuCl2  • I2 + NaCl  • Cl2 + KBr  • Fe + CaBr2  • Mg + Sr(NO3)2  • F2 + MgCl2  Yes Yes No Yes No No Yes

  5. If the metal being oxidized is higher on table J, the rxn is spontaneous • You just told me this is spontaneous • 3Li + AlCl3 3LiCl + Al • Let’s look at it in terms of Oxidation Reduction 0 +3 -1 +3 -1 0 • 3Li + AlCl3 3LiCl + Al • Lithium = 0 +3 so it was oxidized • Aluminum = +30 so it was reduced

  6. If the nonmetal being reduced is higher on table J, the rxn is spontaneous • You just told me this is spontaneous • F2 + MgCl2  MgF2 + Cl2 • Let’s look at it in terms of Oxidation Reduction 0 +2 -1 +2 -1 0 • F2 + MgCl2  MgF2 + Cl2 • Fluorine = 0 -1 so it was reduced • Chlorine = -10 so it was oxidized

  7. Let’s try p. 9, cross out 4-6
