How to Give Well - Matthew 6:1-4 • The Importance of ‘Acts of Righteousness’ Jesus expects his followers to be giving people – v2 • Don’t give for your own gain • ‘Don’t be like the hypocrites’ - v2 • ‘hypocrite’ = an actor • Give as secretly as possible • ‘Don’t let you left hand know what you right is doing’ – v3 Give in as understated, non self centred as possible!

  5. And if anyone gives even a cup of cold water to one of these little ones who is my disciple, truly I tell you, that person will certainly not lose their reward.’Matthew 10:42

How to Give Well - Matthew 6:1-4 • Good givers will be rewarded! ‘You will be rewarded’ – v4 • So what are these rewards? • Not health or wealth • Beware of any preacher that offers these! • The rewards God gives are more valuable than material things. • Rewards on earth - peace, comfort, satisfaction, acceptance and reassurance from God (Beatitudes) • Rewards he keeps for us in heaven - Matt 5:12 & 25:23

How to Give Well - Matthew 6:1-4 • Good givers will be rewarded – v4. • What are these rewards? • Not health or wealth. • Beware of any preacher that offers these! • The rewards God gives are more valuable than material things. • Rewards on earth - peace, comfort, satisfaction, acceptance and reassurance from God (Beatitudes) • Rewards he keeps for us in heaven - Matt 5:12 & 25:23 • Don’t work for rewards – but be assured that if you give freely you will not lose out but actually gain. • Only when you die to self and live for God and others will you get what you seek!
