They had to remain physically fit to fulfill their roles as mothers. • Their main goal was to raise sons who were brave, strong Spartan soldiers. • How does this compare to the roles of women in today’s society?

(C, H) • Athenian Women • Athenian women had very little freedom compared to the women of Sparta. • Athenian mothers educated their daughters at home. • Wealthy Athens families may have allowed their daughters/wives to read, write, and play music. • Treated as a second-class citizen. • Rarely allowed to leave their homes. • Rarely saw their fathers. • How is this vastly different from Sparta? How is it alike? • How can we compare this to today’s society?

(C, H) • Spartan Slaves • Helots: state-owned slaves • Assigned to work a certain piece of land • Had to give part of crop to Sparta • Outnumbered free people of Sparta 20:1 • Military controlled the helots • Could be granted freedom if they fought honorable in wars • Had to wear clothes that identified their were slaves • How is this different from the slaves of Athens? • What do they share in common?
