  3. Major Depression • “common cold” of all disorders • 100 million worldwide; 15-25% in the U.S. • Young adults & women most susceptible • May run in families

  4. Major Depression • To be diagnosed, must experience 5 (usually >2 weeks): • Persistent depressed mood most of the day • Loss of interest or pleasure in most activities • Significant weight loss or gain • Sleep changes • Speeding up or slowing down of physical & emotional reactions • Loss of energy • Feelings of worthlessness, guilt • Reduced concentration / can’t make meaningful decisions • Recurring thoughts of death/suicide

  5. Bipolar Disorder • Formerly known as Manic Depressive (MDD) • Extreme mania (“fast forward”) • Hyperactivity • Excitability • Chaos • Deep depression • Totally withdrawn • “slow motion” • 50/50 male/female • 1% of population • Cause unknown
