  1. South East Asia • 5large land nations- Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Thailand, and Myanmar. • 5 large island nations- Indonesia, The Philippine Islands, Malaysia and Singapore, Brunei • Thousands of smaller islands

  2. Southeast Asia • Tropical Climate • Many natural resources…spices, wood, bauxite, latex/rubber, coffee, tea, coconuts. • Major religions include Islam, Buddhism, Christianity.

  3. Vietnam War • Ho Chi Minh- Independence leader struggles with France who control Indo china • After Treaty of Versailles Minh turns to communism to get rid of French.

  4. Vietnam War • 1954 Ho defeats French at Dien Bien Phu…one of the worst military defeats in French History. • Peace treaty stipulates Vietnam to be divided into Communist north and free south • Ho wants a united communist Vietnam under his rule…Invades South

  5. Vietnam War • U.S. drawn into the war to stop “Domino Effect” of countries falling to communism…Containment. • 1964…U.S officially enters war after Gulf of Tonkin incident

  6. Vietnam War • U.S. loses after 8 bloody years and 52,000 dead. • Country united in 1975. • Today- A growing and prosperous country that is friendly to U.S. and supplies it many products…Still Communist.

  7. Cambodian Genocide • Khmer Rouge- Cambodian communist party and its leader Pol Pot seize country after communist victory in Vietnam. • Vietnam promises to support Pot in his take over bid to rid the country of its monarchy

  8. Cambodian Genocide • Pot sets about to systematically kill anyone who is disloyal or anyone who has an education. • City dwellers forced to move into the country where many died. • More than 2 million out of a total population of 7 million died.

  9. Australia/New Zealand • Former British colonies discovered by Captain James Cook. • 3 large islands • Warm Climate • Rich in natural resources…coal, iron ore copper, zinc, uranium and bauxite

  10. Australia/New Zealand • Sheep abound in both countries…world’s largest producer of wool • Rich British history and traditions…most settlers were from Britain. • Native Aborigines population was impacted but not destroyed.

  11. Australia/New Zealand • Government exactly like Britain…Parliamentary Democracy • Dominant religions are Anglican and Protestant. • Great friends of the U.S. There is a mutual respect and love between all 3 countries
