    2. Ye Have Heard It Said Six times in Matthew 5:21-43 Jesus repeats the phrase, Ye have heard that it was said. At the end of each one Jesus would say, But I say unto you. People say all kinds of things. Most of them have no foundation in the Bible. Glad you came tonight. I appreciate your presence and for your interest in the things that bring us together. Id like to do a little theme with you tonight. Ye have heard it said. What Id like to do tonight is to study some of the things that Ye have heard it said.Glad you came tonight.     3. The Bible warns us of false teachers. 1 John 4:1 Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world. Ye Have Heard It Said

    4. 2 Peter 2:1 But there were false prophets among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you, Where does religious error and confusion come from? (Matthew 22:29) Ye Have Heard It Said When the Sadducees, who say there is no resurrection, came to talk to Jesus they asked Whos will this be? in regard to husband and wife. And Jesus answered them and said, Ye do err, not knowing the scriptures nor the power of God. Thats one reason we have all these religious contradictions out there Ye do err, not knowing the scriptures nor the power of God. As it was in Jesus day, there are number of things that we have heard said that cannot be found on the pages of the Bible. And Id like to talk to us this evening about some of those. I hope youve brought some note paper, pen, pencil, to take some notes.     5. "Ye Have Heard It Said" Let Your Conscience Be Your Guide. The conscience is a product of what youve been taught; whether right or wrong. It may be a safeguard in some instances if youve been taught right. Eventually youre going to get into a lot of trouble if you just go by your conscience. Everybody says that, just about. Do you think thatll work? Do you see anything wrong with that? Well, youre going to get yourself into a lot of trouble if youre going to just follow your conscience religiously. But Id like to first talk to you about what that is. What is conscience? For example, you can take a little child and teach them that its ok to steal. That if you go to somebodys house and see something you like just pick it up, put it in your pocket, and take it home with you. Its ok. If that kid goes to take something will his conscience bother him? No it wont. Why? Because hes been taught thats ok. Suppose you take another child and teach him that its wrong to steal. If that child goes to take something what happens to him? His conscience is touched and he thinks about that. Why? Because hes been taught that its wrong! The same thing is true in religion. A lot of people do a lot of things because theyve been taught Just let your conscience be your guide. Ye have heard it said, people say that all the time.     6. Let Your Conscience Be Your Guide. Saul of Tarsus had a clear conscience (Acts 23:1; 26:9; Gal. 1:23; 1 Tim. 1:13). The only safe guide in religion is the Bible. "Ye Have Heard It Said" Now can you think of somebody in the Bible who had a clear conscience but was wrong? Saul of Tarsus who later became the apostle Paul (Acts 23:1). His conscience didnt bother him. It says in the latter part of Acts 7 into Acts 8 that he held the clothes of those who stoned who? Stephen! It says he consented unto death men and women, dragging them into prison. And he made what of the church? One wordhavoc. He really tore it up didnt he. Tore up the building? No, he was persecuting Christians. And when we read about his conversion in Acts 9 he was on his way to obtain more authority to persecute the Lords people (Gal. 1:23; 1 Tim. 1:13; Acts 26:9). Let Your Conscience Be Your Guide. 2 Timothy 3:16-17 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.     9. Let Your Conscience Be Your Guide. Colossians 3:17 And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him. We need to ask the question Paul asked in Romans 4:3. Not what your conscience says! "Ye Have Heard It Said" Thats the reason Paul told the Colossians But ye have heard it said, Just let your conscience be your guide. And youre going to run into it if you try to teach people.     10. One Church Is Just As Good As Another. Did you know the Bible only talks about the church Jesus built? (Mt. 16:18) In Ephesians chapter 4 Paul makes a list of some ones. Remember what they were? So how can you say one church is just as good as another if there is only one? "Ye Have Heard It Said" You may have heard someone say, Just attend the church of your choice. Because after all, One church is just as good as another. Billy Graham once used the illustration of putting names in a hat. Just pick out one. And he also talks about hats and he says not everyone would want to wear the same hat. And I guess thats true, but that has nothing to do with the religious issue. But he used that as an illustration to show that one church is just as good as another. But thats a false concept altogether. Not twos but ones. Remember what they were. Paul says there is only one body. What is the body? The best passage to define what the body is, I believe, is found in Colossians 1:24. The body is the church. So if theres only one body, there is only one church! What if I said, I have one pen, come up here and take your choice. What would you think of me? Im crazy! Im not thinking right, am I?     11. It makes no difference how one worships, as long as he is honest and sincere. Directions for worship were very specific in the Old Testament (Deut. 16; Lev. 10:1-2; Gen. 4:3-5). To be honest and sincere alone is not enough (Col. 2:23; Mt. 15:8-9). Consider John 4:24. Does that sound like it makes no difference how one worships? (Rev. 22:8-9; Acts 10:25-26) "Ye Have Heard It Said" Honesty and sincerity are important! You got to be that way. But thats not all there is to it. Most people think that as long as they take the time to worship God in some way that He will accept it. They think that because who they are that if they take the time to worship God He should just accept it. In Deuteronomy 16 God told the people where to worship, how to worship, what to do, and what not to do. And you think we can just worship any way we please? Could the Jew? Of course not! But youve heard it said that we can just worship any way we choose. Something better than nothing attitude. Well, that just wont work. (Lev. 10:1-2) Does it make any difference how one worships? Ask Nadab and Abihu, see what they tell you! If it makes no difference how we worship why did God accept Abels worship but not Cains? It says in Hebrews 11 that Abel offered his sacrifice by faith, that is, he offered it according to Gods directions. You see, theres more to it than to just be honest and sincere. It has to be done according to the directions. Suppose I by mistake honestly and sincerely drink some poison, deadly poison. Does the fact that Im honest and sincere about it make any difference of the effects. Not a whole lot! Id be just as dead wouldnt I? Even though I might be honest and sincere about it. So it does make a difference how we worship! And you ought to appreciate that!Honesty and sincerity are important! You got to be that way. But thats not all there is to it.     12. Just as long as youre a good person, nothing else matters. Being a good person is important (Titus 2:12), but you will not get to heaven on good behavior alone. Cornelius was a good man yet he was not saved for he had to first hear words whereby thou and all thy house shall be saved (Acts 11:14). We must obey Christ to be saved (Heb. 5:9). "Ye Have Heard It Said"

    13. Were all headed to the same place, just taking different paths. I agree with that! Its called Judgment Day! (Mt. 25:31-32) There is only one way to get to heaven (Jn. 14:6; 10:9; Mt. 7:13-14). Remember how many were saved on the ark? Not many but few (1 Pet. 3:20). "Ye Have Heard It Said" You go your way and Ill go mine. Youve heard that said! But thats where the separation will start. If there are many ways to get to heaven it seems that Jesus would have said something about that! (Jn. 14:6) Jesus said He was the W-A-YHe left the S off! In John 10:9, Jesus said He was many doors.
