  1. TPC meeting at BangaloreSat. 11 March 2006, 14h-15h • Outline of my talk at tracking session • Discuss how to organize the workpackages • Get ideas as to how to update the LC-TPC organization. • Discuss upcoming PRC meeting • Madhu kindly agreed to draft minutes of the meeting Ron Settles MPI-Munich/DESY LC TPC Design Issues & Large Prototype Planning

  2. “To-do” list for next few weeks/months • Detector Outline Documents (LDC and GLD) • LP planning • Detector Workshops (Instrumentation@Slac and TPC Applications@LBNL) 3-8April2006 • Status report to the Desy PRC 11May2006 (written version due four weeks earlier) • Organization of the LC TPC collaboration Ron Settles MPI-Munich/DESY LC TPC Design Issues & Large Prototype Planning

  3. Outline of my talk on Monday in tracking@Bangalore Ron Settles MPI-Munich/DESY LC TPC Design Issues & Large Prototype Planning

  4. R&D issues for the LC-TPC design and their feedback to the Large Prototype • OUTLINE of TALK • Overview • Motivation, LC-TPC R&D Status • Next step: Build the Large Prototype (LP) • The LC TPC design issues • LC-TPC/LP Work Packages Ron Settles MPI-Munich/DESY LC TPC Design Issues & Large Prototype Planning

  5. TPC R&D Groups Europe RWTH Aachen CERN DESY U Hamburg U Freiburg U Karlsruhe UMM Krakow Lund MPI-Munich NIKHEF BINP Novosibirsk LAL Orsay IPN Orsay U Rostock CEA Saclay PNPI StPetersburg U Siegen America Carleton U Cornell/Purdue Indiana U LBNL MIT U Montreal U Victoria Yale Asia Tsinghua U XCDC: Hiroshima U Minadamo SU-IIT Kinki U U Osaka Saga U Tokyo UAT U Tokyo Kogakuin U Tokyo KEK Tsukuba U Tsukuba Other MIT (LCRD) Temple/Wayne State (UCLC) …Other groups interested? NB: Started as subset of these groups working together reporting to the DESY PRC; it has recently been expanding… Ron Settles MPI-Munich/DESY LC TPC Design Issues & Large Prototype Planning

  6. R&D Planning • 1) Demonstration phase • Continue work with small prototypes on mapping out parameter space, understanding resolution, etc, to prove feasibility of an MPGD TPC. For CMOS/Si-based ideas this will include a basic proof-of-principle. • 2) Consolidation phase • Build and operate the LP, large prototype, (Ø ≥ 75cm, drift ≥ 100cm), with EUDET infrastructure as pedestal, to test manufacturing techniques for MPGD endplates, fieldcage and electronics. Design is starting---building and testing will take another ~ 3 years. • 3) Design phase • After phase 2, the decision as to which endplate technology to use for the LC TPC would be taken and final design started. Ron Settles MPI-Munich/DESY LC TPC Design Issues & Large Prototype Planning

  7. What are we doing in Phase 1 ? Ron Settles MPI-Munich/DESY LC TPC Design Issues & Large Prototype Planning

  8. Phase 2 • Basic Idea: LP should be a prototype for the LC TPC design and test as many of the issues as possible as was done before, e.g., TPC90 @ Aleph • The Eudet infrastructure gives us a starting basis for the LP work • There other LC TPC R&D issues in addition to building LP which will be planned in conjunction with it Ron Settles MPI-Munich/DESY LC TPC Design Issues & Large Prototype Planning

  9. Work Packages for the LP and related work on the LC TPC0) Workpackage: TPC R&D programme A job for LC TPC collaboration to define EXAMPLES (see talk for all of the workpackages) Ron Settles MPI-Munich/DESY LC TPC Design Issues & Large Prototype Planning

  10. Work Packages for the LP and related work on the LC TPC2) Workpackage ELECTRONICS(for LP and for LC TPC)Groups expressing interest to date(others?) a)"Standard" RO/DAQ for LP: Aachen, Desy/HH, Cern, Lund, Rostock, Montreal, Tsinghua, +contribution from Eudet b) CMOS RO electronics: Freiburg, Cern, Nikhef, Saclay, +contribution from Eudet c) Electr.,powerswitching, cooling Aachen, Desy/HH, Cern, Lund, for LC TPC: Rostock, Montreal, St.Petersburg, Tsinghua, +contribution from Eudet Ron Settles MPI-Munich/DESY LC TPC Design Issues & Large Prototype Planning

  11. Review of LC TPC design issues • List of LCTPC/LP Workpackages • End of talk… Ron Settles MPI-Munich/DESY LC TPC Design Issues & Large Prototype Planning

  12. Had phone meeting last Thursday to start • At today’s meeting, let’s continue the discussion to try to understand how to organize this LCTPC/LP work Ron Settles MPI-Munich/DESY LC TPC Design Issues & Large Prototype Planning

  13. LCTPC/LP Workpackages • We have the conveners. Some ideas: • -A first meeting at LBL applications WS to set up: • -“Kickoff” design meeting? • -Conveners get feedback from LCTPC collaboration, then • -Have regular phone meetings • -Less frequent full meetings • -What else? Ron Settles MPI-Munich/DESY LC TPC Design Issues & Large Prototype Planning

  14. LCTPC collaboration • We had for the PRC reports: • -Steering group with 1 representative and 1 backup per country: discuss overall situation, make recommendations • -Regular R&D phone/video meetings set up by me • -Madhu did minutes • -Paul kept track of TPC talks at conferences/workshops • -Some other responsibilites were distributed • What do we need for the enlarged TPC collaboration and Phase (2)? • A suggestion (others are welcome) after some discussion: • -Extend the steering to Japan, China, others to cover all countries, keeping the present setup for the steering. (That’s the easiest way for a first iteration. We can make further changes as we go.) • -Invite the group leaders to join the steering meetings if they wish. Ron Settles MPI-Munich/DESY LC TPC Design Issues & Large Prototype Planning

  15. Upcoming PRC Meeting • Status report to the Desy PRC 11May2006 (written version due four weeks earlier) • Written version: “what’s happened since last PRC” • Start on draft now, put final touch-ups the week of April 10.
