  3. Bacon’s Rebellion • What: Farmer uprising led by Nathaniel Bacon over poor treatment by the English government in Jamestown • When: 1676 • Sig: Shows that the common colonists will not tolerate social or political mistreatment by the government

  4. Chesapeake Colonies The Development of Maryland and Virginia

  5. Maryland - Proprietary Colony – given to George Calvert (Lord Baltimore) as reward for his services - Calvert had two goals for MD 1. Gain wealth 2. Provide safe haven for Catholics in America - Calvert died before he could achieve either, so control was given to his son Cecil (2nd)

Maryland - Maryland Act of Toleration - many Catholics came to MD to avoid persecution, but in time more Protestants moved in - Calvert passes this Act to ensure toleration of all religions – the first of its kind in America (death for denouncing Jesus) - By the late 1600s, fighting breaks out and the Protestants win – becomes similar to VA

Maryland Toleration Act That whatsoever person or persons within this Province and the Islands thereunto belonging shall from henceforth blaspheme God, that is Curse him, or deny our Saviour Jesus Christ to bee the sonne of God, or shall deny the holy Trinity the father sonne and holy Ghost, or the Godhead of any of the said Three persons of the Trinity or the Unity of the Godhead, or shall use or utter any reproachfull Speeches, words or language concerning the said Holy Trinity, or any of the said three persons thereof, shalbe punished with death and confiscation or forfeiture of all his or her lands and goods to the Lord Proprietary and his heires.

Maryland Toleration Act And be it also further Enacted by the same authority advise and assent that whatsoever person or persons shall from henceforth uppon any occasion of Offence or otherwise in a reproachful manner or Way declare call or denominate any person or persons whatsoever inhabiting, residing, traffiqueing, trading or comerceing within this Province or within any the Ports, Harbors, Creeks or Havens to the same belonging an heritick, Scismatick, Idolator, puritan, Independant, Prespiterian popish prest, Jesuite, Jesuited papist, Lutheran, Calvenist, Anabaptist, Brownist, Antinomian, Barrowist, Roundhead, Separatist, or any other name or terme in a reproachfull manner relating to matter of Religion shall for every such Offence forfeit and loose the somme of tenne shillings sterling

  9. Virginia - Began with Jamestown 1607 - Problems occur in mid-late 1600s 1. Economic - tobacco prices drop due to surplus of tobacco - labor shortages due to Native attacks and disease - indentured servants and slavery

  10. Virginia 2. Political - Bacon’s Rebellion - Main Players - Opposites 1. Sir Wm. Berkeley 2. Nathaniel Bacon - Reason (Backcountry vs. Wealthy) - As Jamestown’s population grew, people wanted/needed land - Led to the need to settle inland

  11. Virginia Reason continued: - Gov. didn’t protect small farmers (economically or physically) - How? 1. only interested in wealthy (rich excused from taxes) 2. no voting unless on Council 3. tobacco drop/no outlet 4. no protection from Natives

  12. Virginia What does Bacon do? - Bacon attacks Natives, but gets no support from Berkeley - Berkeley says it’s rebellion - Bacon burns Jamestown - Bacon dies, rebellion ends

  13. Virginia What does it show us? 1. Colonists will not tolerate mistreatment by the government. 2. Colonists are very willing to take matters into their own hands.
