What is RFID? • Radio Frequency Identification • Technology that uses communication via electromagnetic waves ( wireless) to exchange data between a terminal and an object. • Components: Reader and tag. • When energized by a nearby reader the tag broadcasts its unique identification number to the reader.

  3. RFID IN THE MILLITARY • Keep track of soldiers location. • Keep track of assets or weapons of the military. • Identify who is entering and exiting the camps ( on the gate).

  4. Types of assets tracked •   IT Equipment •      Weapons •      Firearms •      Lab Equipment •      Research Equipment •      Vehicles

BENIEFTS OF RFID IN THE MILLITARY • Better warehouse management system for ammunitions and supplies in general • Better service/maintenance system • MPS ( mailing preference system) for the instruments • Garage monitoring • In-out monitoring from buildings or areas for either vehicles or personnel or devices • Better information in general and certainly interoperability with other forces • Reduce of costs

  6. LIMITATIONS OF RFID IN THE MILLITARY. • Poor read rates in the presence of some materials. • Expensive • Time- consuming.

SOCIAL AND ETHICAL ISSUES OF RFID IN THE MILLITARY • Security  The government keep there weapons and soldiers more secure because they know were they are at all times and they can provide tactical and geographical help. • Privacy  The soldiers are being tracked at all times. Everything they do, the government knows about it.

  8. SOCIAL AND ETHICAL ISSUES OF RFID IN THE MILLITARY • Reliability  They would depend on the RFID chips a lot. If something were to happen to the actual chip they are faced with a big dilemma. • Integrity  When storing and tracking your information through an RFID chip, terrorist also have an advantage. If they got a hand on one of them they can hack through it and use it against them.
