  2. Types of Governments • Every country has a government, they just differ in the way their leaders are chosen and in the amount of power held by the people. • Governments are usually shaped by traditional beliefs of its people and by their history. • They fall into two types • Non-democratic (Autocracy-rule by one person) • Democratic

  3. Nondemocratic • A government where the people do not have the power to rule • Absolute Monarchies • A monarch is a person (king, queen, czar) who reigns over a kingdom or empire for life. • In the past some monarchs had all the power and rule by force and where called absolute monarchs. • Power is transferred through family members. • Laws are decided by the king or queen. • Examples- Sweden and Saudi Arabia

  4. Nondemocratic • Constitutional Monarchy • Also called a limited monarchy • The king or queen still governs, but is limited by law (constitution) on what they can or can’t do. • Monarchs usually only have limited power and are only ceremonial heads of state and the power of the government lies elsewhere. Usually the prime minister is the one with the power. • Usually still a form of parliament (Congress). • Power can be transferred by elections or passed from family members usually father to son. • Examples- Britain and Jordan

  5. Nondemocratic • Dictatorships • A dictator is a person who rules with complete and absolute power. • An absolute monarch may be a dictator, but dictators often take power by forceand fear. • Oligarchy is a type of dictatorship to which all the power is concentrated within a small group. • Are authoritarian which means they only answer to themselves and most are totalitarian which means the rulers control every aspect of society (religious, cultural, political, and personal activities. • If they have elections, they are fixed. • Examples- Cuba and Soviet Union

  6. Nondemocratic • Theocracy • A government controlled by one or more religious leaders who claim to rule on behalf of God or the gods worshipped in their country. • Citizens may elect a theocratic government, but the rulers respond to divine guidance and not to the wishes of the people • Divine means the respond to messages from their God or Gods • Examples- Israel

  7. Nondemocratic • Totalitarianism • Involves total government control. • No individual choices. • Rule by fear and terror • Communism • Power is in the hands of top Communist Party leaders. • Individuals can’t criticize the government.

  8. Democratic • The people of a nation either rule or they elect officials who act on their behalf. • Word comes from ancient Greek term meaning “rule of the people” • Direct democracy • All voters in a community meet in one place to make laws and decide what actions to take. • Historically only works in small communities. • Examples- Switzerland • Representative democracy • People elect representatives to carry on the work of government for them. • People consent to be ruled by their elected leaders • Called a Republic (the United States is a Republic)
