  1. Why did we pick Waterpolo? Expectation of significant benefits • Swimming most strenuous sport for breathing • Waterpolo combination of swimming endurance and bouts of intermittent sprints Dutch Sport Federation focus • Dutch Female team are 2008 Olympic Gold Medalist • Special focus and attention to prolong Olympic gold in 2012

  2. Parties involved Contacts @ KNZB: • Rik van der Kolk, bondsarts • Mauro Maugeri, coach • Ilse Sindorf, ass. coach Contacts @ University of Maastricht: • Herman IJzerman, herman.ijzerman@maastrichtuniversity.nl +31 641798109 Contacts @ POWERbreathe: • Jan Folmer, Loft34 bv, distributeur jan@loft34.nl +31 643 828573 • Chris Lord, Product Manager POWERbreathe Chris.Lord@habinternational.co.uk +44 7866 545765

  3. Research Questions • What is the effect of Inspiratory Muscle Training on sports performance and recovery? • What is the difference in effects of IMT between the Endurance group (4x30 @ 15% MIP) and the Strength groep (2x30 @ 50% MIP)?

  4. Set-up Test Group; “Strength” training • 2 sets / day / 30 breaths • Resistance 60% PImax • 6 days / week individually • 1 set in the morning • 1 set end of day / after final swim Control Group; “Endurance” training • 4 sets / day / 30 breaths • Resistance 15% PImax • 6 days / week individually • 2 sets in the morning • 2 set end of day / after final swim

  5. Hypothesis / Expectations • IMT will lead to improvement in Swimming / sprinting times • IMT will lead to a Perception of easier breathing • Results will be greater in the Strength group than in the Endurance group

  6. Measurements Δ Performance • Timed shuttle swim test, 1x25, 1x100, 5x50 total = 375mts with pauses and fixed turning points. Training data and Compliance • Base plus downloading K-units for recording Perceptions • Questionnaire Borg after test • Questionnaire VAS at end of trial

  7. Reality and set-backs Events • Changes in team • Changes in schedule • Physical complaints Effects • Results comparison compromised • Measurements reduced • Compliance issues

  8. Results & Conclusions Results • Significant increase in MIP (32%) • Reduction in swim times, but statistically non-significant. • Reduction in Endurance group larger than in Strength group Take aways • Compliance is important • Important to enforce test- and measurement agreements • Was Swim test reliable?

  9. Results & Conclusions Conclusions • IMT leads to improvements and is valuable addition to normal training routines • Effects in Compliant group larger than in less-compliant group. Management focus?

  10. Effect of Compliance More(n=8) oR Less(n=8)Than 75% training compliance
