  1. Banking on Our Future

  2. Operation HOPE The Mission of Operation HOPE is to expand economic opportunity in underserved communities through economic education and empowerment. Operation HOPE improves the economic quality of life for individuals, families and communities through programs that create stakeholders: converting check cashing customers into banking customers, renters into home-owners, small business dreamers into small business owners, and minimum wage workers into living wage workers.

  3. Banking on Our Future Operation HOPE’S Banking on Our Future (BOOF) program educates youth ages 9-18 at no cost to you, with a focus on urban, underserved communities. The Banking on Our Future classroom program is taught by HOPE Corps Volunteers (primarily finance professionals) who are trained to break down their knowledge of banking into terms that youth can understand and utilize immediately. Program components consist of 5 one-hour modules, including: Module 1: A Course in Dignity Module 2: The Basics of Banking & Budgeting Module 3: Checking and Savings Accounts Module 4: The Power of Credit Module 5: Basic Investments These volunteers not only provide information that is critical in establishing a strong financial foundation, but expose your students to a wealth of opportunities and professional avenues.

  4. FIVE MILLION KIDS (5MK) In addition to our Banking on Our Future program, which was established in Los Angeles in 1996, on September 29th of 2009, we launched our national FIVE MILLION KIDS (5MK) initiative in partnership with the Los Angeles Unified School District. 5MK is a dynamic five year initiative designed to combat the alarming high school dropout rate by rebranding education and “making smart cool and sexy.” By making education relevant and giving students a practical lesson in the language of money, the program links youth aspirations, hopes, and dreams to success through dignity, self determination, education, small business, and entrepreneurship. Banking on Our Future is one of the key elements of our 5MK campaign.

  5. Scheduling BOOF Sample Schedule: We provide you with a Classroom Participation Form to fill out, so that we can capture all this information

  6. Role of Classroom Teacher Role: The teacher’s main role is to provide the volunteer with supportas it relates to behavior management and time management. We thank you for assistance and hope that the presentation will be a great experience for you as well! • Teachers as Partners: • We ask that teachers remain in the classroom with the volunteer at all times • We ask teachers to encourage their students to ask questions of volunteers to help facilitate a discussion. • We encourage teachers to have all their students create a name tag or name tent (found in the student workbooks) so that the volunteer is able to address the student by his/her name. • During the volunteer training we provide our volunteers with some simple classroom and behavior management tips and remind them they are there to have fun and impart their knowledge on the group, not to be a disciplinarian. When issues arise, we suggest that the volunteer let the teacher take care of them in the way that he or she normally does. • Feel free to provide the volunteer with some helpful tips on the best way to reach your students. For example: if your students work better in groups or individually.

  7. "There is a difference between being broke and being poor. Being broke is a temporary situation, but being poor is a disabling frame of mind." • John Bryant, • Operation HOPE, Inc., Founder, Chairman and CEO To learn more about Banking on Our Future, or to schedule it in your school or classroom, please contact: Operation HOPE, Inc.
