  2. Meaning of Islam • Peace & Submission to the will of Allah • In one God – Allah • Last messenger is Prophet Muhammed ( SAW) • Also believe in • All prophets from Adam to Jesus • All the reveled books ( Torah, Zaboor, Injeer, Qura’n) • All the Angels • Life after death – day of Judgement

  3. Illness • Atonement of sins not Punishment • Death is part of the journey to meet God • Strongly advised to seek medical treatment • Gods will • May seem unusually calm • Need to see the brighter aspect • Whatever happens, happens for the best

  4. Routine... • Cleanliness- half faith • Halal food- animal products • No pig/related product • No intoxicants • Pray five times a day • Require a clean & quiet room • Fast for 30 days in the month of ramadan • Over-ride in life threatening situations

  5. Reagrding medical treatments • Allowed • Transfusions of Blood • Abortion to save mothers life • Transplantation • IVF between spouses during marriage • Genetic engineering to save life • Over-ride any rule in life threatening situation to save life

  6. Not allowed • Abortion – as contraception • Euthanasia • Artificially prolong life in Vegetative state • Assisted suicide • Autopsy unless requested by law • Homosexuality

What this means for us.... • Kosher meals/vegetarian • Respect for modesty • Same sex doctors for examination • cultural • Allow time for prayer & reading the Qura’n • Allow family & Imam to visit • Burial of body as soon as possible after death • During delivery – try to have no males • Cultural issue
