  1. GeoSCIAlite – Mission Goal Improved Monitoring and Forecast of Air Quality over Europe via hourly measurements of the composition of the tropopsphere (O3, NO2, SO2, HCHO, H2O, clouds, aerosol) with 10 km x 10 km spatial resolution

  2. GeoSCIAliteMission Profile • The First Geostationary Atmospheric Chemistry Mission • Primary Products: hourly synoptics maps of O3, NO2, SO2, HCHO, H2O, clouds and aerosol over Europe • pre-operational demonstration of user services (EUMETSAT, GMES Atmosphere) • strong scientific value (transport and transformation in the troposphere) • Value Added Products (Air Quality Index, UV-Index, Health warnings, etc.) by combining GeoSCIAlite data with data from other sources via data fussion and assimilation • Measurements from GEO of European Area (10°W-20°E, <5°NS) with • UV + VIS + NIR 290 - 550 nm, 755 – 775 nm • high spectral 0,2 - 0,5 nm • high spatial 10 x 10 km • temporal resolution  60 minutes • Mission Duration: 3 years +2yrs extension (launch in 2009)

  3. SCIAMACHY: trop. NO2, Monthly Mean GeoSCIAlite shall provide this type of data approx. every hour during daytime with nearly an order of magnitude better spatial resolution

  4. Research and Application Areas Primary Objectives • Air quality monitoring and forecast • Detection and surveillance of pollution; • Control of air pollution emissions and their transboundary transport • UV radiation monitoring and forecasting; • Improve Emission Inventories. • Transport and Transformation in the Troposphere • Industrial Pollutions • Link between tropospheric chemistry and climate change Secondary Objectives

  5. Involvement of End-User “End-User-Type” Application Areas • Health Warning (Air Quality, UV) • Transboundary Transport of Pollutants • EU Directives • “GMES Type” End-Users End Users: • EU • EUMETSAT • Environmental Agencies (regional, national, EU) • National Weather Services • …

  6. GeoSCIAlite Proposal will build on the findings from: • GeoSCIA EEOM 1998 proposal evaluation • GeoSCIA/GeoTROPE, EEOM 2002 proposal evaluation • GeoSCIA Improvements Study (DLR) • GeoSCIA UK Study • EUMETSAT post-MSG studies

  7. GeoSCIAliteTeam • German Science Team: MPI Chem Mainz, MPI Met HH, IER Uni Stuttgart, EURAD Uni Köln, IFE/IUP Uni Bremen, IUP Uni Heidelberg, DLR IPA Oberpfaffenhofen ... • Industry: EADS/Astrium GmbH (instrument), OHB AG (platform/launcher, proposal prime) • Operations & Processing: GSOC, DLR-DFD, DLR-IMF Oberpaffenhofen • Value Added Products & End-Users I/F: DLR-DFD Oberpfaffenhofen • UK Team: Uni Leicester, RAL, SIRA, Astrium Ltd. • International Team: EMPA/CH, KNMI/NL, CNRS/F, NASA GSFC/US etc.
