  2. Why Create a Bulletin Board? • Make classroom look appealing, inviting, interesting and colorful • What are some other reasons??

Three Types of Bulletin Boards • Display Boards – • Share Student Work • Celebrate a person or occasion • Back-to-School Night / P-T Conferences • Announce a special event • Content is usually student-generated • Informational Boards • Reinforce a skill • Present new information • Limit the visual clutter • Interactive Boards • Interactive with manipulatives • Easy access, colorful, durable, clear directions

Bulletin Board Basics Measure to Make Sure!! • Lettering • Print size • Spacing • Upper/Lower – ALL CAPS • Left to Right • Balance/Symmetry • By nature, 41% of us look to the upper left-hand corner first… • Formal = one side is a mirror image of the other • Informal = both sides have equal weight but have different arrangements • CurectSpelin, pleeze!!

Bulletin Board Basics Cont’d… • Materials: • Variety/contrast is good – but not too over stimulating • Colorful –make sure colors match; set the mood • Red/orange/yellow = warm colors that jump out at you • Violets/blues/greens = make good backgrounds • Graphics - • Proportioned correctly; Applicable to the topic • Borders should match the theme/purpose • Appearance • Error Free – no smudges, tears, etc. • Borders lay flat and overlap nicely

  6. Other Thoughts… • Purpose • What are you trying to communicate to your students / audience? • Keep it simple! • Less is more! • White space is good • Think about Rhythm • Guides the eye • Depends on placement Lots of things to think about!!

Plan, Plan, Plan • Sketch Up • Sketch up a plan before you begin. • Lay it out so you know where everything is going to go – and it fits!! • Measure to make it look nice • Ideas from Mrs. V.  • Yard stick / ruler = do not eyeball it! • Stand back and take a look! • Does it look nice? • Is it eye appealing?

Where to Display? • Talk at your table – name at least 5 places • Each of you go stand in front of a different place you could put a Bulletin Board display Materials to Use? • Paper on a roll • Wrapping paper • Table Cloths • Fabric • Wall paper • Felt • Styrofoam shapes • Old postcards • CDs • Play money for border

Now it’s YOUR turn! • Today you’ll begin to create a bulletin board! • Pick your partner wisely • Rubric spells it all out • Your idea must be approved by Mrs. Luban or Mrs. V. • Be able to tell us your purpose for the Bulletin Board • Have fun with it! • Timing is on your own – done by Friday, Feb 21

  14. What’s Important?? Divide your board into 4 (or 6) sections. On your Dry Erase board, each person records: One important fact about: (4 minutes) • Purpose? • Materials? • Types? • Basics? • Planning? • Other…

  15. Things to Think About… • Decide on a grade level and a purpose • Sketch it up!! • Have Mrs. V. or Mrs. Luban approve your design • Look at the Rubric!
