  3. Imperialism • c. 1850 Nationalism + Industrialization = Europe stronger than ever • New industrial Nation-States compete for overseas empires in Africa, Asia, and Middle-East • Imperialism: strong countries creating empires by conquering weaker ones

Clash of Cultures • Europeans encounter 1,000+ different ethnic groups in Africa alone • Europeans viewed these natives as “primitive,” “savage,” and “backwards” • “I must say this race is wholly evil and bereft of civilization. Of their customs we have nothing to learn but the verification that they are, indeed, utterly primitive, bizarre, and lacking in all aspects that define menas men.”
