  2. Which time is most prevalent in your classroom? • Allocated time i.e., Time schedule for the school day • Engaged time i.e., Students “on task” but not necessarily learning lesson objective • Academic Learning time i.e., Students successfully “engaged” in lesson objective

  4. Three critical attributes… • Students know and understand lesson objective • Students actively manipulate the content of the lesson in relation to lesson objective • Students experience a success rate of 75-95%

  5. Students know and understand lesson objective… How to facilitate: • State lesson objective or write on board • Discuss lesson objective • Check for understanding of objective • Model behavior necessary to accomplish objective • Use an emotional hook to interest students

  6. Students actively manipulate content of lesson objective How to facilitate: • Move lesson at active pace • Use activities to assess and activate prior knowledge in relation to objective • Cause students to work and discuss in pairs or trios

Active manipulation cont… • Guide students in analysis and discussion of other students’ work to understand processes used to accomplish lesson objective • Require students to support conclusions by using information from an acceptable source • Use emotional hooks to create student interest in activities to accomplish objective

  8. Active manipulation cont… • Implement simulations in which students apply the content of the objective • Plan transitions to minimize lost time • Show relationship between lesson activities and lesson objective • Link learning to living • Help students see connection to their lives
