Early Life • Grew up in Texas • The eldest of six children • Knew she wanted to be a nurse at age 18 • In her early 20s, she was operating room supervisor at Dallas Methodist Hospital • Volunteered for duty after Pearl Harbor
Military Life • Volunteered for Military Service • Lieutenant Roberts became operating room supervisor for the Army’s 56th Evacuation Hospital Unit in the U.S. • Eventually, she was sent to set up a field hospital at Anzio, Italy
First Woman to Receive the Silver Star • The Silver Star is the third highest decoration for valor given by the U.S. Military • During the battle at Anzio Beach, Lt. Roberts disobeyed a direct order to evacuate the hospital and despite the enemy shelling, she and her nurses kept the hospital open to treat the injured
A True Hero • Only one other woman has since received the Silver Star - a sergeant from the Kentucky National Guard for her bravery in Battle in Iraq, SGT Leigh Ann Hester
