  2. Explanation of Assistive Technology • Assistive technology service is any service that assists a student with a disability. This is functionally evaluated in the student’s primary environment.(Georgia Department of Education, 2004). • An assistive technology device is used for many of these students with disabilities. The devices are identified as any item, piece of equipment, modified or customized, that is used to increase or improve the functional capabilities of students with disabilities.

Information on the Law in Regard to Assistive technology • The Assistive Technology Act provides funds for states to support thee different types of programs: • Assistive technology demonstration centers, equipment facilities, information centers, and other consumer programs; • Federal and state programs to give low interest loans and financing options in order to help people with disabilities buy needed assistive technology; • And advocacy and protective services to help people with disabilities and their families if they are eligible for the services. (Family Center on Technology and Disability, 2009).

  5. Hearing Impaired • Hearing systems involve electromagnetic energy to transmit sounds. This involves four main parts: • A sounds source, such as a microphone. • A wire that surrounds the room. • An amplifier. • And a receiver that is placed with the student to wear as he or she would a headset. (NIDCD, 2001).

  7. Seeing Impaired • Assistive technology programs have computers available that can speak the text located on the screen or magnify the text if necessary.

  9. Learning Disabled • Alternative and Augmentative communication is any strategy that promotes helping a student with a learning disability to communicate more efficiently. This will help a child to tell us their needs and emotions.

  11. Physically Disabled • Voice recognition technology helps those who cannot enter information meant for computers with keyboards. Voice transcription software is used for entering data into a computer.
