David Hockney • Born in Bradford, England to Laura and Kenneth Hockney. • Born July 9, 1937 • Still alive (74) • Studied at the Bradford College of Art and the Royal College of Art in London. • English painter, printmaker, and photographer • Was a important contributor to the Pop art movement of the 1960s • Born with synesthesia (sees synesthetic colors to musical stimuli) • Lives and works in Los Angeles, California • Hockney’s older sister is an artist of still life photos My Parents, 1977oil on canvas, 72x72 in.

  3. Education • Went to Wellington Primary School. Then Bradford Grammar School • Studied at Bradford College of Art, then the Royal College of Art in London, England • While at the Royal College of Art, Hockney was featured in the exhibition Young Contemporaries Self Portrait, 1954collage on newsprint,  16 1/2 x 11 3/4 in.

Movement & Style • Early works shows expressionist elements • While in California, used an acrylic medium that produced a realistic style using vibrant colors • When working with photography, aimed for a Cubism effect Pearblossom Highway, 11th-18th April 1986, photographic collage, 77x112 1/2 in.

Photocollage • Used varying amounts of Polaroid snaps or multiple prints of a single object to make a composite image • Created the majority of them between 1970 and 1986 • Steps: • Took Polaroid photographs of one subject • Subject would move while being photographed • Later Hockney moved the camera around the subject instead

Etc. • Hockney was a conscientious objector, worked as a medical orderly from 1957-1959 • Offered knighthood in 1990m but declined • Serves on the advisory board of the magazine Standpoint • Pro-tobacco campaigner • In 2010, signed a letter along with 1oo other artists to the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport protesting cutbacks in the arts
