  7. Life with Andrew at Home • Morning temper tantrums • Argues with mom constantly • Questions directions from his mom • Blames his sister for his mistakes • Aggressive towards sister

  8. Teacher's Observations • Usually angry • Always questions teacher's decisions • Difficulty starting assignments • Classmates do not want to play with him • Fights with classmates

  9. Being Diagnosis ODD Criteria for Behaviors: • Persistent • Have lasted at least six months • Are clearly disruptive to the family and home or school environment Other Possibilities • Conduct Disorders • Mood Disorders

  10. Oppositional Defiance DisorderAxis I: Clinical Disorders A. A pattern of negativistic. hostile, and defiant behavior lasting at least 6 months, during which four (or more) of the following are present: • often loses temper • often argues with adults • often actively defies or refuses to comply with adults' requests or rules • often deliberately annoys people • often blames others for his or her mistakes or misbehavior • is often touchy or easily annoyed by others • is often angry and resentful • is often spiteful or vindictive Note: Consider a criterion met only if the behavior occurs more frequently than is typically observed in individuals of comparable age and developmental level.

  11. Definition Continued B. The disturbance in behavior causes clinically significant impairment in social, academic, or occupational functioning. C. The behaviors do not occur exclusively during the course of a Psychotic or Mood Disorder. D. Criteria are not met for conduct disorder, and, if the individual is age 18 years or older, criteria are not met for antisocial personality disorder.

Prevalence and Causes Prevalence: • 1 - 16% of children and adolescents have ODD • High occurrence of comorbidity with ADHD • Causes: • Biological Factors • History of mood disorder or substance abuse • Brain impairment or chemical imbalance • Environmental Factors • Lack of supervision • Neglect or abuse • Family instability • Financial problems

  13. Treatments • Parent Training • Teach parents how to manage child's behaviors • Focus on positives • Set reasonable limits • Social Skills Training •  Learn how to interact positively with peers • Conducted in school environment
