  1. What is a Thesis Statement? • Turn to a neighbor and write down a definition….you have two minutes to come up with an answer?

  2. It is a destination for your essay. It is a roadmap for your writing. It is a three-pronged, parallel preview of your composition/paper.

  3. A Thesis Statement • Sounds difficult, but it isn’t. • This is not rocket science.

  4. Why learn how to write them? • They are needed for high school and beyond. • They are used in the state writing test – given in 9th grade. • They add organization to your writing. • They keep you from getting lost on your own paper. • They keep you on the right track.

  5. In your thesis statement, you include… • Your opinion or position and three reasons to supportyour opinion. • All of the above should be included in one sentence – this becomes your thesis statement. • This is the preview part of the three pronged, parallel preview; otherwise known as a thesis statement. TAKE NOTES ON THIS SLIDE!!!!!!

  6. How to start your introduction… • A=Attention Getter—Grabs your audiences attention and gives them an idea of your topic. • M= Motivation—Why would they want to read this paper? This explains the purpose of your paper. • A= Assertion (1st part of thesis statement)—One part of your last sentence that states your opinion. A.K.A. the topic sentence. • P=Preview (2nd part of thesis statement)—Includes the preview of what you’ll be covering (3 topics). Usually the second part of your sentence, which helps the reader zoom in on what your writing about. TAKE NOTES ON THIS SLIDE!!!!!!

  7. Model AMAP for Mt. Dew • Attention Getter: An average American consumes 75 gallons of pop a year. That’s a whole lot of soda! I probably drink twice that amount because I love Mountain Dew. • Motivation: Mountain Dew is especially popular with a younger generation of people, like myself. • Assertion & Preview (one sentence): Mountain Dew is the best soda in the world because of how it’s made, its overall popularity, and how easy it is to purchase. TAKE NOTES ON THIS SLIDE!!!!!!

  8. Final Product (a.k.a. Introduction) An average American consumes 75 gallons of pop a year. That’s a whole lot of soda! I probably drink twice that amount because I love Mountain Dew. Mountain Dew is especially popular with a younger generation of people, like myself. Mountain Dew is the best soda in the world because of how it’s made, its overall popularity, and how easy it is to purchase.

  9. Two more things - placement • The thesis statement should be your last sentence of your introduction. • Your thesis statement states where you are going to end up by the end of the paper. You are proving that your position is the right one. TAKE NOTES ON THIS SLIDE!!!!!!

Thesis formula: subject + opinion + reason 1 + reason 2 + reason 3 • Fishing is a highly skilled sport because it requires technical skill, patient endurance, and vast knowledge. • Snowmobiling is an enjoyable activity because it provides sight-seeing opportunities, more mobility, and increased speed. Write down 1 more example! TAKE NOTES ON THIS SLIDE!!!!!!

  11. 1) Intro (w/thesis)+ 2)reason paragraph 1 + 3)reason paragraph 2 + 4)reason paragraph 3 + 5)conclusion = 5-paragraph essay.

Now your turn… • AttentionGetter=Think of an attention getting sentence that could be related to your season (quote, story, statistic, memory, etc.) • Motivation=Why would someone want to hear about this topic? Explain why this season is popular with you (in one sentence). • Assertion=Whatis your personal opinion on this season (topic sentence)…should be short and concise…straight to the point. • Preview= What are the three major points you will be covering in your paper that have to do with this season? Make one sentence about it here. TAKE NOTES ON THIS SLIDE!!!!!!
