  3. Railway If you thought Canada is large country now, imagine how big it was without Internet, cars, and airplanes The far west, Canada’s and Maritimes wanted to be united for trade purposes between each other. This would help to connect Canada from coast to coast

  4. Reciprocity Treaty • Signed in 1854, between BNA and the United States, this agreement allowed for free trade on natural products between the BNA colonies and the United States. • This was signed in order for the colonies in BNA to support each others economies. • Exports grew, and now BNA had a new trading partner, the U.S.

  5. Political Deadloack • The Act of the Union signed in 1841 joined Canada West (Ontario) and Canada East (Quebec) • Ever since this signing, the two sides had equal seats in parliament. • This meant to bills could get agreed upon • George Brown came up with “epresentation by population” and forming a coalition government.

  6. Fenian raids • The issue of Defence was a concern An Irish American group was comitted to over throwing the British colonies. A more expanded, larger Canada, qould be more united and powerful to defend an enemy? Manifest Destiny-The belief that the United States had a duty to take over the land of North America
