3. What is the IDS? • IDS is an integrated system of databases and software designed to help hospitals: • Analyze hospital specific data • Assess demographic information • Measure outcomes

4. Use of Data • Used for internal analysis by organizations that purchase the system • Organizations can allow multiple users per registered workstation • System can not be used to: • Identify individuals • Publicly compare hospitals with other hospitals

5. Data Bases Included in the IDS • Michigan Inpatient Data Base (MIDB) • Michigan Outpatient Data Base (MODB) • Population Data (Claritas) • Use Rates – Physician, Outpatient, and ER (NAMCS) • Michigan APR-DRG Norms (3M) • MEDPAR

6. Michigan Inpatient and Outpatient Data Bases • Voluntarily submitted • Hospital specific • Carefully examined and edited • Administrative data • No charge information • No clinical results • Usually data is available 2 quarters behind current real time quarter

Michigan Outpatient Data Base (MODB) • Includes Procedure Codes 00.5-86.99, Observation, Series Patients, & Lithotripsy • Excludes labs, radiology, & ER visits • All major hospitals participate in the MODB • Some smaller hospitals do not participate: • Caro, Deckerville, Duane Waters, Hillsdale, Kalkaska, Mackinac Straits, Munising, Paul Oliver, and the VA’s • For a complete listing of participating hospitals, go to File on the main IDS menu and select Data Available in the IDS by Hospital

MODB - continued • Assign MS-DRGs to outpatient cases • MS-DRG is assigned so that Product Lines are consistent between inpatient and outpatient • Data included if “owned by the hospital” • Minor procedures like colonoscopies are done in physician-owned facilities and not included • Result is variation between hospitals

9. IDS Reporting Fields • Able to create several different types of reports for your hospital and competitors using the IDS • Reports can be based on a variety of fields • Fields in the IDS include service line, MS-DRG, zip code, procedure code, etc.

10. IDS Reporting Fields • Three categories of reporting fields • Edited fields: These fields are edited and verified through the data collection process. • Examples of edited fields: • Age • Sex • LOS • Zip Code • Diagnoses • Procedures • MS-DRG

11. Unedited Fields • Unedited fields: Some of these fields are new and some are optional, so they are not as reliable. • Inconsistently coded and optional fields are denoted by a caution symbol • Examples of unedited fields include: • Admit Source • Admit Type • Complication • Race

12. User Defined Field • User Defined Fields: These fields are created by the user and can be used like any other reporting field. • User Defined Field is represented by a symbol • Examples of User Defined Fields include service area definitions and product lines

16. Market Share Trends - Report • Provides market share data for up to five time periods • Can report on a maximum of three levels • Can select to report on either discharges or patient days *Demo Data
