  1. Bell Ringer! Record and Analyze the following African proverb: Until the lions produce their own historian, the story of the hunt will glorify only the hunter. What do you think this means? How would the lion’s point of view differ from the hunter? Who is right? Who could the “lion” and “hunter” represent?

  2. Bias • Leaning toward or against a certain person, group, or idea • Preferring one over the other Examples 1 - You like chocolate ice cream better than vanilla and you have to convince your principal which to have in the cafeteria - what could happen? How does this show bias? 2 – Your friend and someone you don’t know both break a rule and its your job to dish out the punishment – what could happen? How does this show bias?

  3. Point of View • A particular attitude or viewpoint, opinion • Bias impacts your point of view Examples: • You get into an argument with a friend over which band member in One Direction is the best singer – who is right? • Think back to lion/hunter – why did POV matter? • In history – think about the settlement of the Americas – was this “progress”? For who? How will answers vary?

  4. Putting it all together • Bias – Blue is my favorite color • Point of view – Blue birthday cakes taste better than green birthday cakes

  5. Unraveling the Evidence… • Bias and point of view exists in many sources, both primary or secondary

  6. Primary Source A firsthand account or physical object that was written or created during the time period being studied • Examples – photographs, diaries, census records, letters, legal docs, etc…

  7. Secondary Source A secondary account or physical object that was created by someone after the event, using information from primary sources or other secondary sources • Examples: textbooks, teachers, biographies, almanacs, encyclopedias, etc..

  8. Primary or Secondary? • P = Firsthand account, directly from time • S = Created after the event, based on primary source

  9. HW - Time Capsule! Imagine you are creating a time capsule about yourself that will be buried and then uncovered in 50 years. You can place 5 items in your time capsule – what will they be? Think about – what will these items tell the world about the kind of person you are right now? Examples – handwriting sample, journal/diary entry, pictures, items that represent favorite sport, music, books, foods, people, pets, so on.. List your object and what it says about you, bring one of the 5 things in with you tomorrow for show and tell 
