Buffalo Up-Bringing • The Army Reorganization Act of 1869 • Maintained four all-black regiments • Passed by radical Republicans led by senator Henry Wilson of Massachusetts • There was the 9th and 10th cavalry regiment and a 24th and 25th infantry regiment • They spent the next three decades on the western frontier

  3. 24th Infantry • This regiment was stationed in Texas from 1869 to 1880 • They were to fight off Indians over the Staked Plains • Served as a supply unit for various cavalry units in Texas and New Mexico. • They also needed to fight off horse thieves and guard strategic points

History on the 24th • 24th was made up of two regiments, the 38th and the 41st on November 1st 1869 • The regiment was originally made in the aftermath of the U.S. Civil War as a segregated unit • People in the regiment mostly made up of veterans of the U. S. Colored Troops or freed slaves • They served throughout the western United States while in activation

  5. 25th Infantry • They served from the 1866 to 1946 • In 1870 the regiment was placed along the Mexican border and New Mexico for the next ten years • They provided border security, building roads and telegraph lines, and sometimes attacking Indian bands • The 25th constructed over 1,000 miles of roads and 300 miles of telegraph wire all over west Texas

War History On 25th • In 1880 25th was transferred to the Great Plains mostly in Dakota territory • Parts of the 25th reg. took part in the last major Indian campaign, the Pine Ridge Campaign of 1890-1891 • In 1894 several companies of the 25th were deployed to break up a strike on the Northern Pacific Railroad it was quickly ended

  7. Spanish American War (25) • On the July 1, 1898 the colored regiments made and attack on El Caney • Men from the 25th were the first on top of the summit • Private T.C. Butler of H company (25th infant.) captured the Spanish flag • Officer from the 12th infantry took credit for capturing the flag • Spanish surrendered on the 14th of July, 25th was closer to Santiago than all other regiments.

World War 2 • From November 1944 to March 30, 1945, the 25th infantry was involved in defensive actions around New Guinea • Regiment was transferred to Morotai Island where it arrived by April 12, 1945 • They participated in offensive operations until the end of the war • Regiment was inactive at Camp Stonemen California on February 3, 1946

  9. 9th Calvary Regiment • The regiment was organized on September 21, 1866 in New Orleans • The men enlisted received $13 per month, plus rooming, boarding, and clothing • The men were enlisted for five years. • The horses that they got came from St. Louis, Missouri

Spanish American war (9th) • In 1898, the 9th regiment served in the Battle of Las Guasimas and the Battle of San Juan Hill • They rode alongside Roosevelt’s Rough Riders • In 1899 and in 1904 the 9th cavalry joined with other cavalry and infantry formed a park system • They fought against Pancho Villa in Mexico in 1916

  11. Second World War (9th) • 9th cavalry was assigned to the 3rd Calvary Division and transferred to the 2nd Calv. Div. to help in World War 2 • The 9th did not serve as a unit in that war. • They were later transferred to the Mediterranean to be of use to other units • The 9th was discharged on March 7, 1944 in North Africa

  12. 10th Cavalry Regiment • Colonel Benjamin Grierson founded the 10th Calvary regiment in 1866 • Life in camp(Fort Leavenworth) was not pleasant because their fort commander was a racist and did not want blacks in a regular army • He made life for them as difficult for them as could • Grierson had them transferred to Fort Riley

  13. 10th Regiments Services • For eight years they stationed at numerous forts throughout Kansas and Indian territory • Provided safety for workers on the Pacific Railroad • Helped string miles of telegraph lines, and help build Fort Sill • In 1867 to 1868 helped in Gen. Sherman’s Campaigns preventing Cheyenne Indians from fleeing the northwest • They were discharged in 1944
