As teachers we are responsible for… “Our first task as teachers is to become aware of our students’ personal histories and cultures, so as to understand their feelings, frustrations, hopes, and aspirations. At the same time, as teachers we need to look closely at ourselves to discover how our own culturally ingrained attitudes, beliefs, assumptions, and communication styles play out in our teaching and affect our students’ learning.”

  3. How can I get to know my English Language Learners? • Find out essential information about the child. • Find out about the student’s previous educational information. • Find out if the child is literate in his or her home language.

  4. Find out essential information about the child… • “What country is the child from?” • “How long has he or she lived in the United States?” • “Where and with whom is the child living?” • “What language or languages are spoken in the home?” • “If the child was an immigrant, what were the circumstances of immigration?”

  5. Find out about the student’s previous educational information… • “The district office in your school is a good source for information.” • “Find someone who is familiar with the home language, such as another teacher, a paraprofessional, or a community liaison, who can ask questions of parents, students or siblings. “ • “Some students may have had no previous schooling or their schooling may have been interrupted.” • “Students with prior educational experience bring various kinds of knowledge to school subjects and may be quite advanced.” • “Be prepared to validate students for their special knowledge.”

Find out if the child is literate in his or her home language… • “If the student is literate you could encourage them to keep a journal using • their native language.” • “Keep native language books, magazines and newspapers on hand in the classroom for the new student.” • “Keep in mind that some newcomers may not wish to be identified as different from their classmates.” • “Become aware of basic features of the home culture, such as religious beliefs and customs, food preferences and restrictions, and roles and responsibilities of children and adults.”

  7. How do we make ELL students feel comfortable? “Maslow’s Hierarchy of Human Needs” • “Safety and security” • “A sense of belonging”

  8. Safety and Security • “Assign a personal buddy to each newcomer. The personal buddy will help the newcomer adjust into the routine and can show the newcomer around the school.” • “Follow predictable routines in your daily classroom schedule.”

  9. A Sense of Belonging • “Assign your student to a home group that remains unchanged for a long time.” • “Seat newcomers toward the middle or the front of your classroom.”
