  1. Atmospheric Heating Chapter 15 Section 2

  2. Bellringer • How is food heated in an oven? • Record your response in your science journal.

  3. Bellringer • How is food heated in an oven? • The heating coil heats the air in the oven by radiation & thermal conduction. The hot air circulates by convection & heats the food & its container. The hot container heats the food by thermal conduction.

  4. Homework Review • Brain Pop Graded Quiz • Email to: hope_mamula@yahoo.com

  5. Atmospheric Heating • Describe what happens to solar energy that reaches Earth. • Summarize the processes of radiation, thermal conduction, and convection. • Explain the relationship between the greenhouse effect and global warming.

  6. Atmospheric Heating • Radiation: Energy Transfer by Waves The Earth receives energy from the sun by radiation. Radiation is the transfer of energy as electromagnetic waves.

  7. Atmospheric Heating • Conduction: Energy Transfer by Contact Thermal conduction is the transfer of thermal energy through a material. • Convection: Energy Transfer by Circulation Convection is the transfer of thermal energy by the circulation or movement of a liquid or gas.

  8. Atmospheric Heating • Brain Pop: Global Warming • BrainPOP | Greenhouse Effect

  9. Graphic Organizer • Form into pairs & complete • Use Textbook: Pgs 456-457 • View Brain Pop Video

  10. Atmospheric Heating

  11. Noting What I’ve Learned • 1. Solar Energy that reaches the Earth. • 2. The Processes of: • Radiation • Thermal Conduction • Convection

  12. Atmospheric Heating • Describe what happens to solar energy that reaches Earth. • Summarize the processes of radiation, thermal conduction, and convection. • Explain the relationship between the greenhouse effect and global warming.
