  2. Building On Strengths

  3. Simi Valley Little League was originated in 1972, with the Challenger Division starting in the late 1990’s.

  4. Bonnie Schaefer’s idea was to create a little league for children with disabilities who could not play competitively in school sports programs, or other private leagues.

  5. The Challenger Division was born, with players ranging from ages 4 through 20. They come from all parts of Simi Valley, with varying school and home life settings.

  6. “I have twin boys aged 20 who love sports”, says Lenore, a parent in the Challenger Division. “Although they help out on the high school team, here they can really play, and find their element.”

  7. “I’ve coached for 9 years in this division,” says Coach Kevin. “We focus on individual growth. Fundamentals are taught based on ability level. In some cases we look for improvements over a whole season, not just game by game.”

  8. In contrast to other sports leagues, the atmosphere here is very relaxed and collaborative. Both for the players and the parents.

  9. The Challenger Division may not have been realized without support from the Amanda McPherson Foundation.

  10. “Amanda was the strongest, toughest, sweetest, most special person we knew,” remarks her mom and dad. “She battled her entire life against a birth disorder called Velo-Cardio-Facial Syndrome which included a heart condition. “

  11. Her foundation includes the Amanda’s Corner initiative which is dedicated to improving the lives of all children with disabilities who attend public schools in Ventura County.

  12. As of January 2007, the foundation has started Amanda’s Corners in nearly every school in the Simi Valley Unified School District and several in other districts. Please visit the foundation website to request a proposal form. Amandamcphersonfoundation.org
