  4. War were declared • AH declares war on Serbia • Russia declares war on AH • Germany declares war on Russia • France Declares War on Germany • United Kingdom declares war on Germany. . This all happens in a matter of days from Late July 1914-Early Aug. • So basically all of Europe is at war with each other, so where does this leave the US?

  5. The Schlieffen Plan German Plan to win the war soon: Defeat the measly French in 6 weeks. Turn attention to Russia PAAAAAARTY Easy right? Goal is to not fight at 2-front war.

  8. Neutrality at 1st • Woodrow Wilson, the Prez. • Runs on his promise to keep us out of war. • US secretly shipping goods to the “Allies” • Germany gets PO’ed. • Germany says they will start attacking US ships if that continues. • US is like eh… We don’t think you will…. • … But Then

  10. The Lusitania • Germans had agreed to stop what we call “unrestricted submarine warfare” but yeah… • On May 7 1915, A German U-Boat sinks the Lusitania carrying US passengers. • This outrages the citizens of the US, Wilson looks weak. • But the US remains “neutral” well kind of.

  11. The Zimmerman Note • Sent from German ambassador Zimmerman to Mexico. . Promised Mexico power it it Declared war on US. . So in 1917, The US finally Declares war on Germany.

  12. Why did it take the US so long to get into War • 1. It wasn’t our war. It was being fought in Europe. • 2. The horrors of WW I, such as mustard gas, flamethrowers, machine guns, total war. • 3. Wilson was trying to stand on his Moral Diplomacy. The US was going to make the world safe for democracy. • 4. The Pacifist Movement.

Horrors of WW I • The Trenches of Hell. • Constant shelling, even if it wasn’t close, it was supposed to make you go mad. • Horrifying weaponry such as Flamethrowers, grenades, machine guns, tanks, planes, poison gas. • WW I has the highest rate of PTSD cases to that date due to these horrors.

  16. Trench Warfare • War of Attrition- Who can abstain the least amount of losses is going to win. • The way it went, one side attacked then it was followed by a counter attack. War was in a stalemate. • First video reels and numerous pictures flood the market, scaring many of the US at home.

US Enters WW I • It eventually becomes too much and the US enters the war in 1917. • The US creates the Committee on Public Information (CPI) to create propaganda to get the US enthusiastic about the War. • Posters, music and movie reels are created to get the US behind the War effort. • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wbggEGUaE28 • “Over There”

The War at Home • Total War- a war effecting everybody both on the battlefield and back home. • War Bonds- Loans made to the govt. so they sold bonds so they could have the $$ needed for war. • Espionage and Sedition Act- You could not criticize the governments war efforts, punishable by law. • Debs vs the US- Can someone objectify against the government if it stands against their morals? • Ruling- not in a time of war.
