  2. Science Standards Timeline February 19, 2008: The Science Standards are approved by the Florida Board of Education 2008-2010: The DOE and school districts develop and implement Professional Development using the new standards

  3. Science Standards Timeline 2010-2011: Adoption year for instructional materials 2011-2012: Full implementation of new standards Spring 2012: New version Grade 5 Science Assessment administered

  5. Why New Standards? • The old standards were ground breaking for their time; their current rating is an “F” • “A mile wide and an inch deep”

  6. Why New Standards? Rise in new international competitors in science and engineering US lags behind in producing college graduates with first degrees in science and engineering

  7. Why New Standards? Global changes and challenges “Science Literacy” is critical due to technological advances

  8. Fewer Benchmarks = Time • Reflection upon prior conceptions in light of investigations and activities • Less repetition of topics = more responsibility for each teacher

  9. World-Class Standards • Modeled after the “Best of the Best” • Increase in rigor and coherence • Prepare students to compete internationally • Fewer topics per grade level • Are written for individual grade levels

  10. World-Class Standards • Move from “covering” topics to in-depth study • Introduce each new topic at the concrete level and move to the abstract and then connect it to other and more complex topics • Students DO more: inquire, experiment, build, draw, make connections, write, and explain

  11. Fewer Benchmarks = Time • Allows for teachers to elicit prior conceptions • Nature of Science can be incorporated into lessons • Students observe, formulate investigable questions, and explore scientific phenomena

  20. Next Steps • May 16 “Science Day will Blow You Away” • DOE Initiative- Wind Energy lessons using the New Standards. • K-6 Teach the New Standards in 2008-09 • The 2008-09 Grade 2 students will be the first to take the new science assessment in 2012 (– in gr.5)

  21. Next Steps • The 2008-09 Grade 3, 4, 5 & 6 students will still take FCAT Science (in grade 5 & 8) based on the “old standards” • THEREFORE - Gr. 3, 4, 5 & 6 must integrate the “old” 15 Annually Assessed Benchmarks while teaching the new standards (i.e. use TASK-Force guides)
