About Us… • We serve the needs of nearly 300 students in a Kindergarten to Grade 12 environment. • Our students come from a variety of local communities, and are choosing OKCS for the alternative program in a faith based environment. • Koinonia is known for its warm and inviting atmosphere. It is a place where students are encouraged to explore and grow in their faith and are challenged intellectually.

Planning Goals and Targets for 2013-2014 Goal #1: Student Engagement • K-6 Literacy Inquiry Question: How do we build within each student reading ability which supports strong reading comprehension? Strategies: Teachers will: • Establish a benchmark reading level for each student. • Use collaboration and discussion methods with students. • Conduct reading conferences with individual students regularly. • Increase instructional intensity for assessed at-risk readers. • Develop fluency through provision of leveled readers. • Introduce and implement strategies to strengthen and support comprehension. • Systematically give instruction in phonics.

Planning Goals and Targets for 2013-2014 Goal #1: Student Engagement • 7-12 Literacy Inquiry Question: How can comprehension be improved through the development of metacognitive skills and vocabulary? [metacognition – thinking about how we think] (link to video) Strategies: Teachers will: • Enable students to plan, monitor, and evaluate their learning. • Teach strategies that help students construct explicit knowledge about when and where to use these strategies. • Empower students to better manage their cognitive skills and determine weaknesses that can be corrected by constructing new skills. • Help students become self-regulated learners. • Employ, teach and model varied methods to develop vocabulary.

Planning Goals and Targets for 2013-2014 Goal #2: Growth in the Instructional Leadership Process Inquiry Question: How can the administrators and teachers work collaboratively in the Instructional Leadership process to improve student learning? Strategies: • Administrators will be coached in the IL process. • Administrators will foster opportunities for teachers to participate in peer observation. • Administrators will develop a culture of distributed leadership. • Teachers will be encouraged to video tape lessons as a tool for self reflection. • Teachers will become increasingly reflective and collaborative in their practice.

Planning Goals and Targets for 2013-2014 Goal #3: Relationships • Relationship K-6 Inquiry Question: How will teachers build positive classroom relationships by developing an understanding/acceptance of individual personality traits/needs? • Relationship 7-12 Inquiry Question: How will teachers establish and maintain effective and appropriate relationships with students and parents? • Strategies: Teachers will: • Become familiar with the 5 Love Languages of Children and the True Colours Personality Types. • Determine each student’s love language/personality colour using a variety of resources. • Endeavor to use each student’s love language/personality colour to enhance individual learning. • Identify strategies to build positive classroom relationships (teacher to student and student to student) Strategies: Teachers will: • Make a personal connection through encouragement and understanding. • Develop an atmosphere of mutual respect, motivating students toward success. • Create a sense of belonging and value in the classroom. • Use humor and creativity to enhance engagement. • Communicate a genuine interest in the lives of students. • Listen, really listen, to student needs and respond with compassion. • Openly communicate with parents.

SuccessesWhat We Accomplished in 2012-2013 Grade Five Drama - Samuelito 366 Operation Christmas Child Shoe boxes delivered by OKCS Cinderella Confidential – Dessert/Theatre Collaboration of both Drama and Home Ec. classes 68 Elementary Students participated in the x-country run. 8 students finish in the top 5 Building Construction Option Small Group Relationship Building

  17. Results and DataOKCS’sReport Card in DetailPart A • A safe and caring school with good programs and quality teaching and learning. • Drop out rate showed a slight decline. • We are very pleased with the pattern of High School Completion.

Our focus to improve the excellence result from last year is significant. In small schools, results do tend to fluctuate, but the 3 year average remains within Provincial average. • Rutherford Scholarship results are within the 3 year average.

  20. Schollie Survey Results and Data The annual Schollie Survey seeks responses from students, parents and staff, and is a measure of satisfaction on a variety of indicators. Results represent the June 2012 Survey. What our students said… 139 responses • What this means… • Our students are generally satisfied, with results similar to those of other schools in Chinook’s Edge. • Course selection for high school continues to be a goal. Surveys indicate a desire for shop class in particular. OKCS tries to support this desire through programs like RAP and Work Experience.

Results and DataSchollie Survey Part 2 - Parents • What our parents said… 32 responses • What this means… • According to most indicators, our parents show satisfaction in many areas of school life. • Program availability has always been an area of challenge for a small K-12 school. We are seeing improvement in survey results, and continue striving to provide the best program possible for our students.

Provincial Achievement Tests – 3, 6, 9 Successes • OKCS students exceed the provincial average in meeting the acceptable standard. • OKCS students have exceeded the provincial average for excellence. • Detailed analysis of the data indicates improvement in all areas of grade nine courses for standard of excellence.

Artifact 4Diploma Examination Results Successes • OKCS data remains strong for students meeting the acceptable standard. • Emphasis on improving the number of students achieving excellence shows significant improvement in the 2013 data. • Teachers are involved in cohort groups as part of the process for ongoing student achievement.

Planning What new provincial goals tell us . . . • An excellent start to learning • There are no required performance measures for this goal. • Success for every student • Students demonstrate proficiency in literacy and numeracy, students achieve educational outcomes, students demonstrate citizenship and entrepreneurship and we eliminate the achievement gap between FMNI students and other students. • Quality teaching and school leadership • Teacher preparation and professional growth focus on the competencies needed to help students learn. Effective learning and teaching is achieved through collaborative leadership. • Engaged and effective governance • The education system demonstrates collaboration and engagement. Students and communities have access to safe and healthy learning environments.
