  1. TIPIS Smoke Hole. Women can set up Tipis in less than a hour. When the tribe moved they could take the tipi down in minutes. At the very top of the tipi there is a Smoke Hole. A Smoke Hole is a hole that lets out smoke from a fire. During the winter the smoke hole could be adjusted. They decorated the outside of the tipi with paintings of animals or stars. The opening of a Tipi always faces east, so the chief could see the rising sun. The paintings on the tipi meant something special to the chief. Tipi covers are made out of buffalo hide for warmth.
