Rationale • “Given the difficulty of establishing and maintaining a disease free status for an entire country, especially for diseases the entry of which is difficult to control through measures at national boundaries, there may be benefits …to establishing and maintaining a subpopulation with a distinct health status within its territory.”

  5. Objectives • zoning and compartmentalisation are procedures implemented by a country to define subpopulations of distinct animal health status within its territory for the purpose ofdisease controland/orinternational trade

In practice… • A zoneis definedprimarilyon a geographical basis (using natural, artificial or legal boundaries) • A compartment is defined primarily by management and husbandry practices relating to biosecurity • Responsibility for both approaches is with theVeterinary Authorityof the country concerned

  9. Chapter 1.3.5. • Clarifies the uses and benefits • Suggests the sequence of steps to be taken in defining a zone/compartment • accurate animal health information • Negotiation between Veterinary Authorities of exporting country and importing country

  10. Disease chapters • The Code makes recommendations for zones/compartments for some diseases • the recommendations depend on • epidemiology of the disease • environmental factors • appropriate and applicable biosecurity measures • Surveillance = essential
