  2. INTRODUCTION: “Endangered” means there’s still time! The earth's ecosystem is in a crisis. Human activities are threatening plants and wildlife at alarming rates. Scientists believe species are becoming extinct at the rate of 1 animal every 15 minutes… …That’s 100 animals per day or 4,000-6,000 per year! Some estimates indicate that as many as 1/5 of all the species on earth today will have vanished by the end of the century! As part of a government program intended to raise awareness on endangered species, you and a group of experts have been selected to research one of these animals and present your findings at the Endangered Species Conference in Hawaii

THE CHALLENGE • Get into groups of 4 or 5 and choose an endangered animal that interests you. • Using the worksheet provided, complete your report using research information on the following 8 questions: • What is the cause of my specie’s endangerment? • What are the laws that protect my endangered specie? • Where is my endangered specie located/ where does it live? • Who are my endangered specie’s predators? • What does my endangered specie eat? • How many of my endangered specie remain? • What can I do to improve the life of my endangered specie? • Interesting fun facts about my endangered specie (List a minimum of 2) • Create a poster of your endangered animal. Include all of the information you researched as well as a picture of your endangered specie. Be creative, make sure it draws attention! • Present your research during the Endangered Species conference (in other words, to the class) in a 3 minute presentation. • HAVE FUN!!!!

Whales are endangered due to whale hunting, entanglement in fishing equipment, collisions with ships, and pollution in the ocean • What are the laws that protect my endangered specie? The laws that protect Blue Whales are the Marine Mammal Protection Act and the Endangered Species Act • Where is my endangered specie located/ where does it live? Blue Whales are found in all open oceans • Who are my endangered specie’s predators? They don’t have any predators, they are the largest mammal in the oceans so they are predators themselves

There are approximately 3,000-5,000 remaining blue whales 7. What can I do to improve the life of my endangered specie? To improve the life of the Blue Whale, we can conserve water, reduce the use of plastics so they don’t get caught in them, adopt-a-whale through a program, use public transit to reduce the effects of climate change which affect the whales. 8. Interesting fun facts about my endangered specie (List a minimum of 2) Blue whales can grow as long as 100 feet in length and they are the largest animal on the planet!
