The success of the LNF depends upon: • learners understanding how they are applying and developing literacy and numeracy skills in different contexts and different subjects • teachers helping learners to make connections between their learning in different subjects • learners seeing and understanding their next steps for development using AfLstrategies. 6

  6. Exemplification, not best fit • It is hard not to try to level a learner as ‘on year’. • This is the opposite of the best-fit approach of learner profile moderation. 7

Suggested steps to making the connections for learners: • Audit the curriculum for coverage • Audit deeper for progression • Map key assessment opportunities across the curriculum for different strands of the LNF • Denote key responsibility for the development of certain LNF skills to groups of subjects • Devote time to professional discussion around standards of expectation 12

NSP Development Grant Funded Rubrics Network What is a rubric? • A scoring rubric is a set of criteria and standards typically linked to learning objectives. • It is used to assess or communicate about product, performance, or process tasks. • Developed in New York State for Regents exam in the 1970s. In CSC some schools worked together to enhance their understanding and application of the LNF. They devised a system or rubric, in which pupils can clearly see their progression from bronze to platinum. These frameworks began as general statements from the PoS and LNF and then developed using specific detail on the assessed work.
