What is Service Learning? • Service-learning-- • Combines service objectives with learning objectives • Changing the recipient and the provider of the service • This is accomplished by combining service tasks with structured opportunities • This links self-reflection, self-discovery, and comprehension of values, skills, and knowledge content.

3. Why is Community Service Important? • Being part of the community • Helping others that are not as fortunate • Meeting new people • Networking • To have fun • To use skills and knowledge in real life situations • It's the Golden Rule: "Do unto others as you would have others do unto you."

4. Service Learning Stats • 712,000 college students had participated in service • 12.2% of University faculty were offering service-learning courses • 6,272 service-learning courses were taught • 9% required service-learning courses for graduation • Source: www.servicelearning.org

5. Habitat is a non-profit Christian housing ministry Volunteer labor, donations of money and materials Habitat builds simple and decent houses in their community

6. Martin Luther King Build • January 15, 2007 • In honor of MLK • A house built for a local family • OUR JOBS • Hammer nails into roof • Hold ladders for people • Hand out water for the volunteers

8. Me hammering nails in the house • Hammering the nails in the house was a difficult task! • We had to hammer through metal and hold the nail in place to keep the roof from blowing away • Most of the time I would hit my OWN finger nail instead of the actual one! OUCH!!!

Must Ministry's 10th annual 5K run A Thanksgiving morning run Benefits go towards Must Ministries MY JOBS WERE: Organizing bags for runners that included: T-shirt, water bottle, coupons and other donated items Checking in runners and giving them their numbers Making sure everyone was taken care of

11. Big Shanty Elementary School • GOAL: Raise money for the PTA • Me and Erica’s Jobs • Handing out drinks to the volunteers and Carnival participants while collecting their tickets • Putting Ice in the buckets to keep the drinks cold • Helping at certain stations

17. What do I think about Community Service? • Community Service is and was an excellent way for me to meet new people • Not only was I able to help others but I was having fun while doing it • There are so many interesting and loving people helping others and I am lucky to have met them

18. If I could do it Again… • I’d do it the same!!! • I would defiantly do Community Service again • Even though sometimes it is hard to get out there once you do it, it is so much fun • I felt really good about myself after helping others enjoying themselves
