  1. Lab Safety WHMIS

  2. WHMIS • WHMIS stands for Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System • The purpose of WHMIS is to reduce injury, illness or disease caused by exposure to hazardous materials.

  3. New to WHMIS • Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS) has been adopted • There are now WHMIS symbols and Hazardous Household Products symbols • Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) are now called Safety Data Sheets (SDS); with no expiry dates

  4. Chemicals in your daily life have characteristics that make them useful, hazardous, or both. • Some types of matter that you use everyday can be hazardous • Information labels give you information about how to properly handle matter

  5. Chemical Safety Around the House/Work/Lab • Hazardous Household Products Symbols (HHPS) • Each symbol has two types of warnings: • Whether the hazard is the container or contents • The type of hazard

  6. HHPS: The Borders • Dangerous Container • Border looks like a traffic yield sign • Container is dangerous

  7. HHPS: The Borders • Dangerous Product • Border looks like a traffic stop sign • Contents of the container are dangerous

  8. HHPS: The Hazards • Explosive • Container can explode • If punctured or heater, pieces can cause serious injuries

  9. HHPS: The Hazards • Corrosive • Product inside the container will burn the throat or stomach if swallowed • Burn skin or eyes or contact

  10. HHPS: The Hazards • Flammable • Product will catch on fire easily if near sparks, flames, or heat

  11. HHPS: The Hazards • Poisonous • Product will cause illness or death if you eat or drink it • Smelling or licking the product may be enough to cause harm

  12. HHPS: Household Hazardous Product Symbols

  13. Discussion Questions • What is the HHPS system? Why is it used? • Which HHPS would be on spray paint?

  14. WHMIS Symbols • WHMIS uses a diamond shape around the hazardous classification

  15. WHMIS Symbols • Flammable • Product will catch on fire easily if near sparks, flames, or heat

  16. WHMIS Symbols • Oxidization • Has the ability to combine with oxygen and create an explosion or fire.

  17. WHMIS Symbols • Compressed Gas • Has the ability to exploded as the contents are under high pressure.

  18. WHMIS Symbols • Corrosive • Product inside the container will burn the throat or stomach if swallowed • Burn skin or eyes or contact

  19. WHMIS Symbols • Exploding Bomb • Contents inside have the ability to explode.

  20. WHMIS Symbols • Poisonous • Product will cause illness or death if you eat or drink it • Smelling or licking the product may be enough to cause harm

  21. WHMIS Symbols • Health Hazard • Product will attack your respiratory system and organs – lungs, diaphragm, chest, nasal and etc…

  22. WHMIS Symbols • Health Hazard • Product will attack your respiratory system and organs – lungs, diaphragm, chest, nasal and etc…

  23. WHMIS Symbols • Acute Toxicity • Product will attack your eyes, skin and respiratory system.

  24. WHMIS Symbols • Biohazard • Product have Biohazardous Infectious Materials. Examples will be in doctors office where they discard used needles, vomit bags and etc…

  25. SDS (Safety Data Sheets) SDS has sixteen different parts that give the user more detailed information about a dangerous product. You do not need to memorize these, but just be aware of them.

  26. SDS (Safety Data Sheets) • Identification • Hazard(s) identification • Composition/information on ingredients • First-aid measures • Fire-fighting measures • Accidental release measures

  27. SDS Sheets • Handling and Storage • Exposure controls/personal protection • Physical and chemical properties • Stability and reactivity • Toxicological information • Ecological information • Disposal considerations

  28. SDS Sheets • Transport information • Regulatory information • Other information

  29. Work on the provided worksheet by your teacher.
