  1. Diane Avenue Church of Christ Ephesians 3:12-14 (NIV) 12 In him and through faith in him we may approach God with freedom and confidence. 13 I ask you, therefore, not to be discouraged because of my sufferings for you, which are your glory.

  2. BIBLE CLASS The wings that overthrow discouragement Heb 4:14-16; James 1:2-12

  3. The Wings that overthrow Discouragement Purpose: For everyone to understand the powerful emotion of discouragement. Our God understands our discouragements and wants us to know that. 1. His time on this earth let us know that He knows. (Heb 4:14-16) 2. Does Jesus care?. and the answer is a powerful Yes!.

  4. The Wings that overthrow Discouragement Hebrews 4:14-16 (NIV) 14 Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has ascended into heaven,Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess. 15 For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet he did not sin.16 Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need

  5. The Wings that overthrow Discouragement Let’s define discouragement 1: the act of discouraging: the state of being discouraged 2: something that discourages Synonyms:demoralization, despair, despondency, disheartenment, dismay, dispiritedness

  6. The Wings that overthrow Discouragement C. Discouragement could also be likened unto a battery that runs down. 1. to loose, unloose , to set free. 2. to dissolve; metaphorically, to weaken, relax, exhaust. Commonly in the passive a. "to have one's strength relaxed, to be enfeebled through exhaustion, to grow weak, grow weary, be tired out"

  7. The Wings that overthrow Discouragement Hebrews 12:3 (NIV) 3 Consider him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.

  8. The Wings that overthrow Discouragement Paul’s discouragement with the church in Corinth were many, his burden was heavy, yet his faith remained strong. Paul was concerned about what would happened after he was gone. The church was open to all types of false preachers and false doctrine. There were divisions from inside the church. So it was easy to see why some could become discouraged.

  9. The Wings that overthrow Discouragement Acts 20:29-31 (NIV) 29 I know that after I leave, savage wolves will come in among you and will not spare the flock. 30 Even from your own number men will arise and distort the truth in order to draw away disciples after them. 31 So be on your guard! Remember that for three years I never stopped warning each of you night and day with tears.

  10. The Wings that overthrow Discouragement Discouragement can bring the most powerful men to a standstill A. Paul had a burden that at time became very heavy; …… the church. (2 Cor. 11:28) NIV 28 Besides everything else, I face daily the pressure of my concern for all the churches.

  11. The Wings that overthrow Discouragement God’s Love : Eph. 2:1-3 1 As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins, 2 in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient. 3All of us also lived among them at one time, gratifying the cravings of our flesh and following its desires and thoughts. Like the rest, we were by nature deserving of wrath.

  12. The Wings that overthrow Discouragement Titus 3:4-7 (NIV) 4 But when the kindness and love of God our Savior appeared, 5 he saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit, 6 whom he poured out on us generously through Jesus Christ our Savior, 7 so that, having been justified by his grace, we might become heirs having the hope of eternal life.

  13. The Wings that overthrow Discouragement Questions: 1. Have you ever begun to wonder about .what if.. and became discouraged? 2. Has the fear of uncertainty led you to become discouraged? In Heb. 4 The early Jewish Christian became discouraged because they thought that maybe the old way was better i.e. persecution, have you ever felt discouraged because of the trials you experience?

  14. The Wings that overthrow Discouragement II. Discouragement can be shared like a virus God will hold one responsible for discouraging His people. 1. Satan works as an enemy to discourage. (Ezra 4:4-5) 2. Our work is to recharge the batteries! (Heb 12:12-13)

  15. The Wings that overthrow Discouragement Ezra 4:4-5 (NIV) 4 Then the peoples around them set out to discourage the people of Judah and make them afraid to go on building.5 They bribed officials to work against them and frustrate their plans during the entire reign of Cyrus king of Persia and down to the reign of Darius king of Persia. Footnotes: Ezra 4:4 Or and troubled them as they built

  16. The Wings that overthrow Discouragement Hebrews 12:12-13 (NIV) 12 Therefore, strengthen your feeble arms and weak knees. 13 “Make level paths for your feet, "so that the lame may not be disabled, but rather healed. Discuss Satan, Emotionalism and Frustration

  17. The Wings that overthrow Discouragement Let’s see how we can turn these trials into triumphs! James 1:1-12

  18. The Wings that overthrow Discouragement Turning Trials into Triumphs. So many times people think that when they accept Jesus Christ into their heart and become a Christian, all their troubles and trials will disappear only to find out that that is not true and they find themselves unprepared and discouraged.

  19. The Wings that overthrow Discouragement All too often we approach trials as being difficult prompting groaning and complaints because we don't understand the purpose for them. As we continue in our study today, we will see how our response and our attitude contributes to our Christian Maturity. We will see how God uses trials to mold and shape us into what He wants us to be, to bring honor and glory to His name.

  20. The Wings that overthrow Discouragement James 1 After a brief introduction in verse one, James immediately jumps right in and gives us essential elements to have victory over our trials. Each of these essential elements asks us to evaluate our own reactions, values and perceptions. There are four particular elements that James gives us.

  21. The Wings that overthrow Discouragement Let's look at them: 1. A Joyful Attitude - James 1:2 2. An Understanding Mind - James 1:3 3. A Surrendered Will - James 1:4, 9-11 4 .A Heart that wants to Believe - James 1:5-8

  22. The Wings that overthrow Discouragement You know, trials come in many forms, they are a part of life and we need to be prepared now for when they do come. James 1:2 says -2 Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds,  | Notice it doesn’t say that you might face trials it say’s “whenever”|

  23. The Wings that overthrow Discouragement 1 Peter 4:12 12 Dear friends, do not be surprised at the fiery ordeal that has come on you to test you, as though something strange were happening to you. The scriptures is telling us that we will go through trials; the question is , „how will we go through them—as victims or victors.

  24. The Wings that overthrow Discouragement James 1:2-4 2 Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, 3 because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance.4 Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.

  25. The Wings that overthrow Discouragement James compassionately identifies with us and says ‟my brother and sisters‟. Meaning my brothers and sisters in Christ, he knows what we will go through; he too is going through various trials and persecution. Then he exhorts us, knowing that at this time they are going through these trials, he says count it all joy. This is a remarkable command—we are to choose to be joyful in situations where joy would naturally be our last response.

  26. The Wings that overthrow Discouragement Question: James 1:3-4 In what ways can we preserve, Be joyful, when discouragement and despair is around the corner? What is meant by “ pure joy”

  27. The Wings that overthrow Discouragement Some trials can be like a little pebble in our shoe that pricks us and irritates us each time we walk, others can be gut wrenching, life changing experiences. James is encouraging us to have pure joy in the very face of trials. He is not asking us to pretend to be happy. Rejoicing goes beyond happiness it is an inner peace that only God can give us.

  28. The Wings that overthrow Discouragement Happiness centers on earthly circumstances and how well things are going here and now. True joy centers on God and his presence in our experience. It is possessing a spirit of joy, an attitude of joy and perseverance as we face the trials in our life.

  29. The Wings that overthrow Discouragement Our worship should lift us up. (1 Cor. 14:3, 31) Have you ever been in the presence of God and not receive encouragement? 14:3, 31 3 But the one who prophesies speaks to people for their strengthening, encouraging and comfort.. 31 For you can all prophesy in turn so that everyone may be instructed and encouraged.

  30. The Wings that overthrow Discouragement 1 Corinthians 12:7 (NIV) 7 Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good. e.g. Every member of the body of Christ has been given some spiritual gift that is evidence of the Sprits working in their lives. All the gifts are intended to build up the members of the church. They are not to be used for selfish advantage as some of the Corinthians were doing.

  31. The Wings that overthrow Discouragement Our Joyfulattitude: This joyful attitude comes from knowing as we see in James 1:3 that God is allowing this trial in our life for a reason and purpose. That you can see the trial through His eyes and know that He will see you through it, and that there is a greater purpose beyond just ourselves that we are going to embrace .

  32. The Wings that overthrow Discouragement Keeping the mind renewed while discouraged 1. Have you ever stopped and considered how ridiculous our thoughts can be? Take a day any day and consider some of the things that go through your mind. 2. Faith requires thought and direction, emotion alone does not. (1 Pt 1:13) 13 Therefore, with minds that are alert and fully sober, set your hope on the grace to be brought to you when Jesus Christ is revealed at his coming.

  33. The Wings that overthrow Discouragement Why do you think keeping the mind renewed while feeling discouraged is important?

  34. The Wings that overthrow Discouragement Why do you think keeping the mind renewed while feeling discouraged is important? Helps us face the reality of our situations? Helps us heal and fight Satan Before we answer this lets consider the following

  35. The Wings that overthrow Discouragement Various trials means variegated trials, trials of many colors. Trials come in all shapes and forms. From financial problems, health issues, moral issues, accidents to the loss of loved ones and more. They can be small trials to huge life changing trials. Peter used the same word in 1 Peter1:6 . Now, you can respond to trials in many ways, but how you respond reflects on your Christian walk. Where are you in your Christian walk? How mature are you?

  36. The Wings that overthrow Discouragement 1 Peter 1:6 (NIV) 6 In all this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials.

  37. The Wings that overthrow Discouragement Questions: When trials come, do you cry out and say „Why God, why me!‟ and simply give up and turn your back on God? Do you find yourself discouraged, despaired Or do you trust that God is in control of every aspect of your life and seek wisdom and guidance through the trial.

  38. The Wings that overthrow Discouragement Questions Do you groan and complain or do you say „Lord, I know you have a plan and a purpose for my life, teach me what you want me to learn through this , give me your eyes that I may see what you want me to see through this trial.‟

  39. The Wings that overthrow Discouragement Discouragement comes in all shapes sizes, and ages, but ….. With faith…..

  40. The Wings that overthrow Discouragement Where are these wings that are suppose to help us? Our God gives us a startling and incredible promise. (Isa 40:30-31) (NIV) 30 Even youths grow tired and weary,    and young men stumble and fall; 31 but those who hope in the LORD    will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles;    they will run and not grow weary,    they will walk and not be faint.

  41. The Wings that overthrow Discouragement 1 Corinthians 10:13 (NIV) 13 No temptationhas overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.

  42. The Wings that overthrow Discouragement There are going to be times in our trials where we can see what God is doing and the purpose for our adversity; but there are also going to be times that we don't understand why God has allowed that trial into our lives. We don't understand why we are going through such pain or having to watch a loved one go through pain. It is in these times that we need to respond with humility, faith, trusting God to work in our lives according to His plan and purpose.

  43. The Wings that overthrow Discouragement We must fight the temptation to withdraw. You may need to learn how to find comfort from God. (Acts 11:23) - 23 When he arrived and saw what the grace of God had done, he was glad and encouraged them all to remain true to the Lord with all their hearts.

  44. The Wings that overthrow Discouragement Now I know sometimes it feels as though we can't handle any more, and we ask God as Paul did with the thorn in his flesh to please take this from me. But God knows how much we can handle and will give us the grace we need to see us through. He may not want to remove that thorn as with Paul and that is ok. We need to Trust that God is working everything out for our good

  45. The Wings that overthrow Discouragement Philippians 4:13 (NIV) 13 I can do all this through him who gives me strength.

  46. The Wings that overthrow Discouragement Do not accept and expect failure. It is not through our own strength but through Christ who strengthens us. And that is what this is about. Learning to Trust God to sustain us and help us in our Christian Walk - total surrender of our life to Him - as a bondservant to his master. You know, believing God exists is not the same as trusting the God who exists

  47. The Wings that overthrow Discouragement It is not the trial itself that is to be the ground of our joy; rather, it is the expectation of the results, the development of our character that should cause us to rejoice in adversity. So we are to have a „Joyful Attitude‟; an „Understanding Mind‟; and a „Surrendered Will‟. Isaiah 26:3

  48. The Wings that overthrow Discouragement Isaiah 26:3 (NIV) 3 You will keep in perfect peace    those whose minds are steadfast,    because they trust in you.

  49. The Wings that overthrow Discouragement No matter what the trial is for, there is a reason and purpose! Ask God to give you wisdom in your understanding of the trial so that you may grow spiritually. .

  50. The Wings that overthrow Discouragement James 1: 5-8 (NIV - 5 If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you. 6 But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. 7 That person should not expect to receive anything from the Lord. 8 Such a person is double-minded and unstable in all they do.
