  1. Thursday Seminars Guidelines & Grades

  2. Seminar Guidelines • Choose a partner (if desired) • Choose a topic from the provided list. • Presentation Time Frame: 40 minutes

  3. Seminar Guidelines (continued) • 5 – 20 slides (slide numbers will vary) • Keep slide language simple and visible. • Use appropriate videos if necessary • Use images if necessary • Use handouts if necessary • Have a works cited page (MLA format).

  4. Point Value: 50

  5. Seminar Grade • Accurate & detailed presentation (10 points) • Uses time well/ prepared (10 points) • Teaches the class her topic (10 points) • Engaging activity follows teaching (20 points)

  6. Seminar Grade (continued) • Class participation required in activity • (Deducted from student’s final presentation grade)

  7. Seminar Grade (continued) • Dress for success • Make eye contact with students • Answer questions students may have • Current Quarter Grade or 2nd Quarter Grade

  8. The Activity 1. Game 2. “Quiz” 3. Activity is NOT simply pulled from the internet 4. No activity can be the same as a previous presentation’s.

  9. Guidelines for Socratic Seminar Participants • It’s OK to pass when asked to contribute • Do not stay confused • Stick to the point currently under discussion • Listen • Talk to each other, not just the leader

  10. Must Haves: • Title Slide • Objectives Slide (Students will be able to… or Students will understand that…) • Slides to explain/teach your topic • Activity (“Quiz” or Game)-not necessarily slide driven • “Any Questions?” Slide • Works Cited Page (MLA Format)

A Level Participant • Participant offers enough solid analysis, without prompting, to move the conversation forward • Participant, through her comments, demonstrates a deep knowledge of the text and the question • Participant has come to the seminar prepared • Participant, through her comments, shows that she is actively listening to others • Participant offers clarification and/or follow-up that extends the conversation • Participant’s remarks offer clear mastery of the topic.

B Level Participant • Participant offers solid analysis without prompting • Through comments, participant demonstrates a good knowledge of the text and the question • Participant has come to the seminar prepared, with notes and a marked/annotated text • Participant shows that he/she is actively listening to others and  offers clarification and/or follow-up

C Level Participant • Participant offers some analysis, but needs prompting from the teacher • Through comments, participant demonstrates a general knowledge of the text and question • Participant is less prepared, with few notes • Participant is actively listening to others, but does not offer clarification and/or follow-up to others’ comments • Participant relies more upon his or her opinion, and less on the facts to drive her comments

D or F Level Participant • Participant offers little commentary. • Participant comes to the seminar ill-prepared. • Participant does not listen to others, offers no commentary to further the discussion   • Participant fails to pay attention to the required time. • Participant has no understanding of the concepts she is teaching the class.

  17. Sending and Saving • Post your presentation in a shared AP folder.
