History of Oil & Gas Exploration in Afghanistan • Oil discovered in the 1930’s in the area of Sar-i-Pul due to natural seepages. • First wells drilled in the Kashkari Block in 1957 by Swedish Engineers. • Development Drilling commenced in 1959 by the Soviets in the Angot Field with additional exploration leading to discovery of the Kashkari and Aq Darya Fields. Total of 322 wells drilled in Amu Darya Basin. • 2D seismic exists for some of Amu Darya Basin (focus on gas fields). • Extensive well reports (in Russian) and logs, some core samples are available. • Gravity and magnetics were used to locate potential traps. • Gas production has been approximately 2.2 TCF; currently gas production is for local use. • Oil has been produced only sporadically from Angot; Angot was recently put back into commercial production. • Afghan-Tajik Basin is much less well explored – fewer than 20 wells.
