  1. Should there should be regulations on the use of performance enhancing drugs

  2. My argument • There should be restrictions on performance enhancing drugs in sports

  3. Some basic facts • Performance enhancing drugs can cause serious health risks especially if abused. • Many people consider these drugs as not ethical for use in sports. • People who abuse these drugs often experience severe withdraw symptoms from them if they stop. http://www.drugabuse.gov/

  4. More facts • The use of performance enhancing can cause hepatic, cardiovascular, reproductive/endocrine, dermatological, and/or psychiatric problems. • Hypertension is not uncommon secondary to fluid retention and blood volume increases. This leads to an increased risk of myocardial infarction, cardiomyopathy, and even sudden cardiac death. • Strokes also become up to 9 times more likely. http://www.drugabuse.gov/

  5. More facts • things such as an improved diet and sleep combined with working out can help just as much if you work hard at something http://www.sixwise.com

  6. Common side effects of steroids are mood swings, manic behavior, insomnia, irritability, and lack of good judgment. http://www.drugabuse.gov

  7. A quick story • PLANO, Tex., Nov. 25 - Taylor Hooton was expected to join the starting rotation next spring for the baseball team at Plano West Senior High School. • “You could count on the kid to throw strikes,” said Billy Ajello, Taylor’s best friend and a catcher at Plano West • Taylor was popular. He was a cousin of Burt Hooton, the former major league pitcher in college. But on July 15, a month past his 17th birthday, Taylor Hooton killed himself.

  8. His parents and a doctor familiar with the case said they believe that Taylor’s death was related to depression that he felt upon discontinuing the use of anabolic steroids. • “It’s a pretty strong case that he was withdrawing from steroids and his suicide was directly related to that,” said Dr. Larry W. Gibbons, president and medical director of the Cooper Aerobics Center, a leading preventive medicine clinic in Dallas

  9. A doctors opinion • Michael Maloney, M.D., director of University Sports Medicine, said. “We need to be vigilant in warning young athletes about the very real dangers of steroids, and provide them with the knowledge on how to safely boost their performance.” • That’s right VERY REAL DANGERS

  10. Interesting but sad • Nearly 50 years ago American sports medicine specialist Dr. Gabe Mirkin asked 100 athletes: "If I could give you a pill that would make you an Olympic champion — and also kill you in a year — would you take it?”

  11. Alarmingly, over half said they would. Since that survey the use of performance enhancing drugs has increased.

  12. Some statistics • 47% of users reported that the main reason was performance enhancement, while 53% reported it was to recover from an injury. • Doses taken by abusers are often 10 to 100 times higher than doses prescribed by doctors to treat medical conditions. This raises the risks significantly. www.healio.com http://www.drugabuse.gov

  13. Approximately 400 people die each year from the use of steroids. Often the victims of the drugs have a heart attack www.Ask.com

  14. These drugs takes away from the achievement that comes with the goals that you obtain through hard work and effort. • If these drugs were legal players who didn’t take them would be at a disadvantage.
