  1. History’s Habits of Mind By Mr. Rogers

  2. Focused Review • Class materials • Weighted Grades • SW Rules & Rogers’ RESPECT • Tardies • Assignments & Due Dates • Technology in class • Procedures • Consumer/Student

  3. What is a Habit? Take the next 2 minutes and discuss in your group what you think the definition of a habit is.

  4. #1 Understand the significance of the past to your life, both private and public, and to our society.

  5. #2 Distinguish between the important and the inconsequential, to develop the “discriminating memory” needed for a discerning judgment in your public and personal life.

  6. #3 Perceive past events and issues as people experienced them at the time, to develop historical empathy as opposed to present-mindedness.

  7. #4 Acquire at the same time a comprehension of diverse cultures and shared humanity.

  8. #5 Understand how things happen & how things change, how human intentions matter, but how consequences are shaped by the means of carrying them out, in a tangle of purpose & process.

  9. #6 Comprehend the interplay of change & continuity, & avoid assuming that either is somehow more natural, or more to be expected, than the other.

  10. #7 Prepare to live with uncertainties & exasperating, even perilous, unfinished business, realizing that not all problems have solutions.

  11. #8 Grasp the complexity of historical causation, respect particularity, & avoid excessively abstract generalizations.

  12. #9 Appreciate the often tentative nature of judgments about the past, & thereby avoid the temptation to seize on particular “lessons” of history as cures for present ills.

  13. #10 Recognize the importance of individuals who have made a difference in history, & the significance of personal character for both good and ill.

  14. #11 Appreciate the force of the non-rational, the irrational, & the accidental, in history & human affairs.

  15. #12 Understand the relationship between geography & history as a matrix of time & place, & as a context for events.

  16. #13 Read widely and critically in order to recognize the difference between fact & conjecture, between evidence & assertion, & thereby to frame useful questions.

  17. In Your Group Discuss What does each habit mean? Write Craft your own definition of each habit.

  18. Summary Habits of History are the qualities that professional historians use constantly when examining questions, concerns, or topics of history. These are essential habits for me to develop to begin to approach the study of history as a historian. All of these habits can be applied to most subjects that I am enrolled in, and will be critical if I want to become an informed decision maker. It is essential for me to become an informed decision maker in order to be a successful member of a representative democracy.
