  3. Participating countires • the 26 EU Member States (MT is suspended until further notice) • Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway (the "EFTA-EEA countries", i.e. those countrieswhich are members of the European Free Trade Association and also belong to the European Economic Area) • Turkey • Croatia • Switzerland

  4. Sectoral programme Comenius Specific objective of Comenius programme • to develop knowledge and understanding among young people and educational staff of the diversity of European cultures, languages and values. • to help young people acquire the basic life skills and competences necessary for their personal development, for future employment and for active European citizenship.

  5. Operational objectives • To improve and increase the mobility of pupils and educational staff in different Member States • To enhance and increase partnerships between schools in different Member States, with at least three million pupils taking part in joint educational activities by 2013 • To encourage language learning, innovative ICT-based content, services and better teaching techniques and practices  • To enhance the quality and European dimension of teacher training  • To improve pedagogical approaches and school management

  6. Who can participate? • Institutions involved in school education up to the end of upper secondary level • Teachers and other categories of staff within those schools • Associations, not-for-profit organisations, NGOs and representatives of those involved in school education • Persons and bodies responsible for the organisation and delivery of education at local, regional and national levels • Research centres and bodies concerned with lifelong learning issues • Higher education institutions (IST, Study Visits) • Bodies providing guidance, counselling and information services.

  7. Structure of the Comenius programme Partnerships School Partnerships (Multilateral, Bilateral) Regio Partnerships eTwinning on-line partnerships Individual mobility • In-Service Training for Teachers • Preparatory visits • Comenius assistants and Host schools • Individual Pupil Mobility (not in all countries)

School Partnerships Multilateral Partnerships • Must include schools from at least 3 participating countries, • Pupil/teacher or institution/management oriented, • Project meetings between all institutions involved in the partnership • Exchanges of staff and pupils involved in project activities (e.g. teacher exchanges, study visits, pupil exchanges), • Financial support available for local activities and project mobilities. Bilateral partnerships • 2 partners from 2 different participating countries, • Language oriented, • 2 reciprocal class exchanges lasting minimum 10 days (pupils aged 12 or older).

  9. Duration of a project & contract:2 years (August 2011 – July 2013) Financing: Lump sum for mobilites and local activites Call 2010 (data for Slovenia): Received applications: 121 (114 Multilateral in 7 Bilateral) Approved: 52 (48 Multilateral in 4 Bilateral) • Selection procedure at NA.

  10. Regio partnerships Comenius Regio Partnerships consist of 2 "partner regions". Comenius Regio Partnerships help the participating regions to: • develop and exchange bestpractice in school education, • to develop tools for sustainable cooperation across borders, • and tostrengthen the European dimension in school education.

  11. Each partner region must involve: • the local or regional authority with a role in school education • at least one school • at least one other relevant local partner (e.g. youth or sport clubs, parents and pupils associations, local teacher training institutes, other learning providers, VET institutions and local employers, museums and consulting services/ advisory boards). Only local or regional authorities with a role in school education areeligible to apply for fundingand must coordinate the project within their region. Schools and kindergartens can only pariticpate as partners.

  12. eTwinning A special part of LLP programme that enables teachers, pupils and students in 32 European countries to work together using Information and Communication Technology (ICT). eTwinning portal: http://www.etwinning.net/offers: • Partner finding (also for Comenius projects)‏ • Platform for on-line projects (free tools for project activities)‏ • Teacher community (exchange of experience, dissemination of information)‏ • Training (professional development workshops)‏ • Competitions (European and national awards)‏ • Help (national support service)‏
