The vision • “A radical shift towards learners owning their lifelong learning” • “A personal online space for students to access services and store their work” • A portable portfolio to take with you between learning experiences • A key element of the move towards greater flexibility and personalisation in learning

  3. What’s needed? • A neat, useable, web accessible tool (or tools) for recording achievements, activities, events, conversations, useful resources, progress in personal development • Suitable for a wide range of users • Easily transported from one place to the next • Allows presentation of selected items, determined by owner

  6. Challenges • Integration with other systems e.g. college VLE, MIS • Transfer between life stages/institutions – standards, specifications • Institutional strategy – does it fit? • Technical • Data – security?, ownership?, storage? • Suitability for diverse learner groups

  7. Where have we got to? • Lots of effort/investment e.g. JISC programmes • Numerous e-portfolio tools/products available • Some good use of e-portfolio functions, but few using complete tool sets • People are using: commercial products, open source, JISC outputs, DIY

  8. E-portfolios in HE and FE • Most still in “pilot phase” of use • PDP and e-progress • Reflective learning incl. for distance courses • Assessment – evidence of learning • Staff CPD • Few integrated systems • Many developed/used for a particular age or stage

Summary • Agreement on the need for tools to make learning more personalised • Expectation that e-portfolios will be an important part of this • Ideas of what an e-portfolio is vary (terminology, purpose) • Early days for many in HE and FE • Comprehensive use some way off but… • Increasing numbers of Universities and colleges are implementing systems
